I can't take that too serious. There's quite a bit of DT mocking on GH, too. With 7bit, there's probably some history behind that from way before my time, I couldn't care less about that. To pick a side in any of this because I like one of the forums better would be silly.

My school never bothered with any filters. We just had the one computer with a <56k modem and it was pretty easy to keep an eye on what people were doing. This was long enough ago that there was always a queue to use it, too. "Quit hogging the internet!"

At our school we had Apple computers running CP/M. They used to crash quite often, which cured me from falling for any Apple hype ever since. It also trained me to hit save as often as often as possible.

CP/M? You mean Apple DOS. Just like PC DOS, only fruitier. (And neither of them bothered to licence CP/M despite their being shameless clones.)

Apple DOS seems to have nothing to do with PC DOS, BTW.

Here is the short story of DOS:

IBM again approached Bill Gates. Gates in turn approached Seattle Computer Products. There, programmer Tim Paterson had developed a variant of CP/M-80, intended as an internal product for testing SCP's new 16-bit Intel 8086 CPU card for the S-100 bus. The system was initially named QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System), before being made commercially available as 86-DOS. Microsoft purchased 86-DOS, allegedly for $50,000. This became Microsoft Disk Operating System, MS-DOS, introduced in 1981.[5]

I know the Quick and Dirty Operating System story well. One version of the story says IBM only approached Microsoft after CP/M's top dog wouldn't meet with them. A group of IBMers turned up at his office unannounced, and his wife, who was his receptionist, failed to convince them it was worth hanging around until he landed his plane, which he was out flying all day. Bill Gates was all too pleased to meet with them, and bullshitted his way into the deal that made his company. Then bought QDOS real quick!

Yup. My mum gave me (and my younger brothers) her most beat up typewriter to figure out how to type for ourselves. Being nerds in the making, we learned pretty quickly. All horrible styles, of course!
