Usb socket

Hi all,
I am sourcing parts for my first handwired keyboard and I need some help with the usb connection.
I plan to use a teensy as a controller, and unless I want to connect my cable inside the case, I think I'll need some kind of USB extension cable that runs from the controller to the back of the keyboard. Would you suggest a stock mini USB extension cable? I think it would be hard to find the right length. Otherwise, I am thinking of cutting my own cable connecting the teensy to the outside of the case. In this case, what are my options? Which usb socket should I look for? I can see there are a variety of USB mini B sockets (DIP, SMD, you-name-it). I guess it ultimately depends on my experience with soldering...
Any comments will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
