Nifty! IBM had a "light pen" for some of their early terminals. I have one here somewhere, but I can't lay my hands on it just now...

Light pens were all the rage for a while. I remember having one on an early system my family had, maybe the Commodore VIC=20. A little later on, the Nintendo Scope was a variation on the same idea. CRTs are slow, and you can capture them fairly easily.
