I thought Matias ALPS were Cherry compatible - but what I read suggests that it won't be compatible?

Nope, they're not. They use the ALPS mount (also previously called Z-mount in places).

The keyboard's PCB can be designed with cunning to accept both Alps and MX switches. But that's the end of the trick. Those switch families are fundamentally incompatible when it comes to caps. Or indeed 99.999% of PCBs out there, either.

Matias / Alps switches are nice, but carry a lot of baggage thanks to this.

I might be a little late to the party, Is this project still a possibility to happen? I presume that 7bit is a bit busy at the moment with keycap group buys etc. (/me runs hands together thinking of his round 5 order).

I'm very interested in this, I would probably be boring and go for a poker 2 layout, but having soldered it together myself makes it _so_ much better, right?

Yes, this is possible to happen. I'm currently working on the designs.
