Just received a few Pures with blue switches and blue LEDs, a few Pures with brown switches and green LEDs.
I will post more pictures in a couple days and start to sell them here and on kijiji.
Any suggestion on a half decent camera under $800? These photos are taken by my Nexus S

The 600D (T3i in the states) is a great camera, I have the 550D, which is basically the same, but without the swivel screen and a couple of other bits and pieces, core components are the same though from what I know.
What kinda photography will you be using it for?

The body is irrelevant.
Glass (lens(es)) is the big factor.

I wouldn't say irrelevant, depends what he wants to do (if he wants video etc)
But once you've got a body you're happy with, lenses are where the money should go.

I agree with both death and storm, i'm thinking of getting a 60d just for video and the faster burst speed, my 400d is fine, especially with my nice 50mm 1.4, 24-70mm l lens, and a 24-300mm supertele, i get some seriously sharp shots, with fast focus, on an outdated, bottom of the range camera
Only problem is that it does't do video which sucks... also would prefer phase detection so it focuses faster, so i would recommend the 600d.

if you're not stuck on getting a dslr, i've been reading into the Sony NEX line quite a bit, and i'm currently torn between a 5N and an F3. There's limited glass options for them right now, but Sony is committed to bringing more out for the E mount, and there's going to be a few 3rd part options later this year from what I've heard too.

I was thinking about nex-5n when i saw it listed in a Blacks store as $599. But they do not have stock now. EPL-2 was also under my consideration when they are sold at $449.99 with 14-44 and 40-150 lens at Henry`s. Sold out yesterday. Now I am looking at SonyA77 and Canon T3i. It will be used for both tour and in door still objects.

For the most part just getting an SLR with some half decent lenses makes a world of difference over the majority of point and shoot cameras. I have an old Cannon XTi if I remember the model correctly and I love it. It does not have video features though so I miss that occasionally. Instead of Cannon lenses I've purchased Tamron which is a Japanese manufacturer and I've been very happy with both lenses I have from them. I think one is 28-300mm with max f/3.5 and the other is I think 17-50mm with max f/2.8 or something close to that. If you want to take pictures at night or low light scenarios you want as low as possible f/n.n which is your aperture. My lens with f/2.8 takes significantly better pictures in museums and low light like dawn/dusk. My fiancee has a fish-eye lens that is f/1.8 and it is pretty amazing what I can do with that at night.
If you don't need video you can get below $800 with any decent $200-300 body and a nice $500-600 lens. The problem with SLR camera lenses you will realize is very similar to the problem with mechanical keyboards: once you get one you want more for different scenarios and situations.
