The one part we're missing, metal cases. Given the amount of custom boards we're going to push out, we need to get the case part sorted...

Do we have enough members geographically close enough to each other to rent a warehouse and do this? Like maybe Berlin?
Actually 7bit with a mill?...

Maybe your local hackerspace (or similar) has a mill. Ours is unofficially partnered with a makerspace that has a CNC mill.

Where did you get those blue color key caps on the second board on the left?

If I'm not wrong those are the
"Glow in the dark" key caps that come with Raptor Gaming keyboards.

Location is not the problem. I'm at the source.
Just need this and someone who knows how to operate it:
CNC fräsmaschine.
Prices are around 3500 EUR. Not too much I think.
35 EUR per case if we do 100.
Only need material.

No. I think any cellar which is dry will do.
Maybe we should buy this one:

A bit more expensive (8500 EUR), but can handle much larger keyboard sizes, so kbdfr can get his metal keyboard case as well!

CNC programming isnt actually that hard, Ive done a little myself. Easiest is to get one that allows transferring data from PC, there are CAD programs that can write the cnc code for you based on the model you build.
This one would suffice:

Having almost completed a job requiring dozens of characters and macros, I'll soon be reducing my Tipro keyboard to a qwerty module in the middle with a 8x8 module on the left and another 8x8 (instead of 12x8) module on the right. My keyboard will then be a real space saver: 67 cm instead of 82 cm.
So there's no need for such a huge machine.
Especially when considering a metal keyboard case is about the last thing I would want

So we need to have a whip round for a few thousand pounds.
Dan can you sell all those keyboards to get us a CNC machine? I think those + clack collection would be enough.

We could all collect money and buy such a machine.
Just 100 EUR for everybody if we get 25 people together.
Maybe the demongolator starts a new thread with all posts regarding this ...

Realistically, we are looking at 4 big ones. Software, frässpindel, tools will cost a good bit too.

http://www.gsimple.eu/ or
http://www.freebyte.com/cad/cadcam.htm
Never used either, so dunno how good they are.
Also, this is only the CAM software, we still need CAD to make the models.

How many projects and cases would the community have to go through before it became worthwhile over subbing out the work?

http://www.gsimple.eu/ : For LINUX Users: You can run GSimple by using wine
LOL!
The 2nd link is much better.
http://www.freebyte.com/cad/cadcam.htm
It contains a list which includes some really free software.

The Alt keys are SP PBT dyesubbed keycaps from boost's GB on *gasp* GH. They were available for pretty cheap, I think around $20 a set but are currently sold out. Chances are they will pop up on Classifieds relatively soon.

I won't name anyone, but a very good engineer from GH just bought a $5000 USD CNC machine, has software and access to industrially priced aluminum and other metals. But sure, I'll sell all my stuff, fund one in another country and pray it all goes well =)

fossala wrote:7bit, do you only use free software?
Yes.
The reasons are:
More useful, can be modified, does not cost be penny, runs on whatever I manage to compile it for, if support ends and it is important for me, I can still use it.

Same here, I was just curious.
