My understanding is that it depends on both .
If the controller even supports NKRO, the diodes are required;
if it doesn't, you can add all the diodes you want, it won't make NKRO ..

However, adding diodes will get you to 6KRO given a sane controller and a bog standard USB HID compliant device driver on the OS.

How would the controller know you've added diodes? There were no diodes there to start with, the controller will be programmed to block the "bad" key press combos. And it is going to keep doing that no matter how many diodes you add, unless you reprogram it.
