150 years ago today, Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed. I had to mention it.

A good man quite as idiosyncratic as him couldn't get elected to that office these days. Or from as ordinary a background in society. Washington turned more aristocratic as time went on. Imagine how icky it'll be if next year's election is house Bush vs. house Clinton!
Besides the obvious tragedy of losing Lincoln before his full time in history, that fool Wilkes-Booth wound up shooting his own people in the foot by raising tensions sky high just as the healing of war's end was starting to get underway. An interesting thought experiment is to imagine how much sooner civil rights might have passed, and southern blacks could all vote, if Lincoln hadn't seen the play.
