LEDs on a handwired keyboard

So I am currently working on a slightly modified AMJ40 layout keyboard using a Pro Micro and only have one spare pin left for the backlight (if it is any possible).
On kbfirmware.com I can select that pin for backlight but how do I exactly wire it up? Should I wire each column in series then wire all the columns in parallel?
