I've got ALPS lying around and I'm thinking about changing the switches in my Dell AT102W work keyboard.

Does Windows support locking caps lock switches?

Isn't that supposed to be dealt with in keyboard's firmware?

PS/2 does not have any support for locking Caps Lock. The USB HID specification has separate codes for Locking Caps Lock as opposed to momentary Caps Lock but Windows does not support that either.

The TMK firmware has optional support for locking Caps Lock by comparing the switch state with the Caps Lock LED and emitting mock presses of a momentary key.
You could perhaps build a PS/2-to-USB converter with TMK firmware with this enabled. The feature is of course a bit of a kludge and the host and the keyboard/adapter could get out of sync with one-another.

You can use locking switches with Soarer's Converter, but you have to write a macro for it that basically has an onbreak command to press caps lock again. Works with windows and mac that way.
