Re: ESSK - Enhanced FSSK PCB.
Not sure why you'd want 10 keyboards for yourself.. Make that 9 if these work as drop in replacements inside an FSSK. I'd gladly take one if it can be the cherry on top of my TS project. ;) Actually, that is what i was thinking; order 10, one or two for DMA, one for myself, and offer the rest capac...

Re: ESSK - Enhanced FSSK PCB.
I have been away from Deskthority for about a year and decided to visit today. Great to hear that the Triomate works. Do you think this would work on a 0.4 mm board? I think i would be up for paying for a batch of 10 ESSK size if you would not mind making the controllers. Oh yeah. I moved to Ohio. G...

Re: Beam Spring 104+SSK Reproduction Project! First Batch In Stock, Shipping early next year after New Model F Project
i'm surprised that no one suggested "unsaver + numpad" to address the 8x16 controller limitation. sure, you would be paying for two cases and controllers, but it also (a) make folks that might prefer an unsaver happy, and (2) would allow folks to mix it up (F unsaver + beam tenkey), and (iii) allow ...

maybe you would be interested in a "broken" mini M?
it being in parts might be easier to get through customs.

Re: FSSK PCBs (1st round)
I ordered the new SSK and it is nice ... except for that annoying thing with the Q key (which i hear they have a firmware fix for). I promptly ripped off the tenons (melted plastic studs) to look at the membranes and LEDs. I worked up a 16 x 6 matrix that is elegantly simple. The only issue is/was t...

Re: Unicomp retired black 104/105 Classic models + latest on the Mini M SSK
Converting a Mini M to Mini F will be more complicated than i hoped. The new barrel frame has four obstructions that block 8 keys. The three blockages covering CV, NM, and <> are there to support and stiffen the space bar stabilizers. They can probably be removed with careful use of a razor (less th...

I have been asked about licensing and for DipTrace files. I consider the work i did for this trivial. Any differences between my design and Tom Wong-Cornall's original should be considered licensed the same as the original (GPLv3 iirc). Attached is the micro USB DipTrace file. Again i am having trou...

Re: Unicomp retired black 104/105 Classic models + latest on the Mini M SSK
it would be pretty simple to design a custom controller. I will be doing that for my F conversion, but "capacitance sensing" so not an appropriate fit for membranes. I posted this in another thread. Sharing here too. Biggest risk of blocking/ghosting on columns C and H. Hold down any two numbers and it will block two keys on the QWERT row.

Re: Unicomp retired black 104/105 Classic models + latest on the Mini M SSK
I had the "feature" where Q doesn't register. It is not my most commonly used key, but i would have wanted it fixed if i had not already decided that i would be cracking it open to get to the matrix. Still, i would think that Unicomp should have found that bug before shipping. The 16 x 12 matrix is ...

Re: Another FSSK Conversion Project
I use Scroll Lock in Excel and to activate the KFM "select source" menu, but i agree that i rarely use the key and the LED is never needed. But for the SSK (and other keyboards too), it would be nice to have a "layer lock" LED. The embedded ten-key is just a locked layer after all. A lot of folks en...

We can get two layer 365 x 175 mm PCB in 0.4 mm for $100 delivered (JLCPCB) at quantity 10. That thickness includes mask both sides. I think the thickness of the mask is about 0.1 mm. Another FSSK Conversion Project
iDollar designed a PCB for F conversion several years ago, but I thought there was room for some improvement. My biggest criticism of his design was trace routing; specifically traces too close to other traces, pads, and tenon holes. Much of these issues were due to matrix and controller choice. Eig...

i just ordered a mini. i expect that i will try it out for a few days before i crack it open and start on the F conversion. Re: Replacement Foam Mat for IBM Model F Keyboards?
I am pretty sure the documents are in "units". You should be able to select your unit value when you open the file. Also, any CAD software should be able to scale a drawing. If you are on Windows or Mac, DeltaCAD is "beginner friendly" and the free trial version is fully functional. After 45 days, y...

You can go onto Etsy and search for "EVA costume". Most of what you get will be for laser patterns - but you can PM them and ask who they recommend for materials and service.

Re: Bringing the IBM PC XT into the 21st Century
I draw them out as 2D DXF file and import them into DipTrace. Wait, whole sense card? Does it count as one pin, or it's just "some copper fill" for diptrace? It is multiple "imported object". The entire import does not add to pin count. This is all presuming that you are using a 0.8 mm thick 2 laye...

Re: Bringing the IBM PC XT into the 21st Century
If you used KiCad for the footprints I'd appreciate them :) I am a DipTrace man myself. I don't actually use footprints for the switches. I draw them out as 2D DXF file and import them into DipTrace. This way they don't count against the 300 pin max for the free version. You should be able to creat...

Re: Bringing the IBM PC XT into the 21st Century
What makes me sad is that these projects arrive very close to the end, bright minds work and find solutions, and then suddenly... I am "OK" at "PCB design", and "not good" at "project management" or "promotion". I never planned to "sell" these myself, but did promise to share everything needed with...

Re: Replacement Foam Mat for IBM Model F Keyboards?
Most "art foam" is in fact EVA. It is used a lot in cosplay circles because it is (often) colorful and easy to work with. It is sometimes a bit stiff for model F foam, but it worked for me.

Re: Replacement Foam Mat for IBM Model F Keyboards?
As laser cutters and services become more ubiquitous, i really should publish the DXF files for these. I had some cut a while back by laser and was very pleased with the quality and price. I will put this on my "to do" list if you guys ask for it.

Re: (Model MF) Remodeling the Model M (aka.. the Mara)
A basic principal of capacitive and contact keyboard matrix design; rows and columns should intersect exactly once. If they intersect more than once, you will have two switches that produce the same result (at best) or two that do nothing (at worst). Your 121 key matrix will likely be 6 by 21 or 22....

Re: (Model MF) Remodeling the Model M (aka.. the Mara)
Very little sound is generated by the flipper. Most comes from the spring smacking the inside of the barrel when it buckles - with secondary coming from vibration of the spring itself. Changing the spring will have the biggest impact on sound. I think Ellipse reported this too.

Unfortunately, that is not going to work. There are actually too many things wrong for me to go into it. I'll try to explain how to do it right in a future post. The idea behind this thread is to take an off-the-shelf M and make it an F by swapping out just membrane, flippers, and controller. Changi...
