one more (probably stupid) question though: do i need to connect the controller's power and gnd pins to the keyboard as well..?
Power no. Connecting ground to lets say metal case is good practice but not mandatory. It'll work fine without it.

Yep like this one.
156$ shipping though :)

Locally I've found Canon AP 800 with SMKs. So there's hope one with Alps will pop up eventually.

Re: olivetti typewriter keyboard

Ok I think I know what's going on here. Why trace from pin 5 continues after "...." and "ctrl" key? It goes all the way under "R" and "4". Does the "R" switch bridges pin 5 and pin 33 permanently? If that's the case they're the same. Same configuration of pads is under "M" and that circle by the ent...

hey, thanks for helping me out! you're right, the u's lower leg should be pin 31 instead of 30! there are probably some more errors, i thought i'd iron them out as i go. No problem. Always glad to help. I've tried to make sense of the matrix with pins you provided. Row by row and I'm stuck on T. So...

Re: What's your piece of keyboard unobanium?

Considering vintage prices nowadays, every board with somewhat interesting switch is unobtanium. Lets just say I'm glad I was able to start early enough to be able to try out as many switches as I did  The four in particular I probably never stop looking for are: 1. Alps SKFF board. Rare as hel...

You have to figure out the matrix. 40 pin connector suggests it's bare bones keyboard without any ICs (but check anyway).

IBM 5576-001 Alps Plate Spring
Shipping might take some time, though. It's my "white whale" keyboard.
Great choice!
Shame those boards are so expensive and hard to buy in "western" market.

My keyboard of choice hasn't changed since I've stumbled upon marqs. First typewriter conversion was from Olympia ES 100. Used daily from 09 Feb 2018 till 14 Dec 2019. So almost 2 years. And this one took a beating since I did game on it a lot. To the point the E key crapped out at one point and sta...

Hi there. For sale keyboard module from Olympia ES 100 typewriter. Partially restored. Switchplate and the rest of metal parts sanded and repainted. Switches are Marquardt Butterfly's. Re: Chicony 5182 not working, can it be fixed?

At this point it's going to be hard to pinpoint what's wrong with the board. Still think that main IC got fried or at least some part of it. And testing ICs is beyond my capabilities and knowledge. I guess one way of checking it would be seeing what's the output in logic analyzer. But again I'm to s...

Re: Chicony 5182 not working, can it be fixed?

Ok so both ICs have proper voltage which is a good sign.
Did you connect the clock and data lines to check the keyboard (in either configuration)?
I presume the XT/AT switch is set properly to AT :)

Re: Chicony 5182 not working, can it be fixed?

Don't give up that easily :) Search for the datasheet of the other IC (the one closest to cable) and figure out where the voltage goes. If you have the datasheet of the main IC check the leg that's bent. What's it for? After that connect the board properly and check voltages on both ICs. If there's ...

Re: Chicony 5182 not working, can it be fixed?

You can search for a data sheet of the closest IC. And check which leg is 5V. Then trace it back to the cable pin. Then you'll have ground and voltage sorted out. With clock and data pins you can experiment without worrying of damaging anything. Problem is, the damage could be already done. Wrongly ...

Re: Chicony 5182 not working, can it be fixed?

What's the source of replacement cable? Is it from another 5182?
First thing to check is that the keyboard is actually properly connected.
There's a picture on wiki of 5181, and the pinout goes like this: Clock, Data, Voltage, Ground.
