Re: Best vintage keyboard without spending life's savings?
Oh yeah, there's no doubt that Model Fs have an even cleaner feel than Ms, but I think Ms are still vastly superior to most MX stuff out there. If you have the budget for it, yeah for sure get an F. But with ~$100 I think you'd be better off with a basic Model M if you wanted to go buckling spring ...

Re: Best vintage keyboard without spending life's savings?
Yeah that's interesting, I've never heard of a Model M described as "mushy". To me they're one of the cleanest, most crisp feeling keyboards out there, basically the opposite of mushy. Have you tried on in person?

Re: Best vintage keyboard without spending life's savings?
I think the obvious answer you'll get from most people is a basic Model M. It's the quintessential "vintage keyboard". It's plenty easy to score them off eBay for a hundred bucks, or even less if you're patient and check frequently for deals. Or for a little bit more you can buy a brand new Model M ...

Ha, the garage door opener button in my last place was old and barely worked. I always wanted to replace it with an MX switch but never got around to it. Glad to see someone else realized my vision!

While it doesn't use the honeywell switches, you may enjoy this project which is a spiritual successor of sorts

Ohh, awesome. The non-3278 style is exactly the type of case I would imagine for this keyboard.

Given the matrix restrictions I think it's great!
BTW, how's the Model F backlog coming (Or: what's the latest expectation on when the first round of these boards are going to ship out?)

These are some interesting points you bring up, and I've actually been playing around with various numpad related edits myself lately.
I want ( and ) on my numpad, since I use those frequently and don't like them stuck on a shift layer. How are you guys actually sending all these characters? Right ...

Re: NKRO keyboards for art installation
The problem with all those pressure studies is that that's going to be for pressure on a flat, even surface. Keyboards are not that. If the entire weight of my body is spread over the surface area of my foot, yeah, it won't be too bad. But if I'm standing on a few switches, now the entire weight of ...

Re: NKRO keyboards for art installation
I feel like you're looking at static pressure and ignoring the dynamic pressures that come from walking, jumping, stomping, tripping and stumbling and falling onto them, etc.
Sure, 99% of people might be careful. But there's always that one person, and also accidents happen. People would trip ...

lol those keyboards are going to be instantly destroyed. Have you tried stomping, standing on one foot and wheeling in place, etc. on a test keyboard to see how it fares?
If you really want the keyboard ...

Re: My Gray Badge Model M collection
My favorite would be the standard M, since it was made on my birthday! A very close second / sometimes tied for first is the Screen Reader/2 pad. It was the first rare / unique / special board I found that wasn't just a run-of-the-mill keyboard. Also, by an incredible coincidence, it was made either ...

Re: My Gray Badge Model M collection
Yeah I can I suppose, but with a huge caveat: I'm just a lowly VFX artist who taught himself python to help with work, and then frustratingly stumbled my way through C++ to cobble together something that at the end of the day sent the right codes to the computer. I'm not a programmer and I have no ...

Re: My Gray Badge Model M collection
Yeah, it speaks PS/2, albeit weirdly. Each key sends different scancodes for down and up. For example, key one sends scancode (decimal) 6 when you press it, and 134 when you release it. So I used a teensy and C++ to write my own converter / remapper for it.

I mean... those are the options, I dunno what else to tell you haha.
People are always asking for modern, Alps inspired switches. So someone finally puts in the work and the expensive R&D to make them, and then people are like "No not like that, I want them cheaper". It was a risky step taken to ...
