Another potential mod for quieting a Model M is to put small paper disks between the spring and the key.
I did this briefly on one key to help nudge a bent spring back into shape. It also had the side effect of reducing sound a few dB.
It got me to thinking about the potential to sound-reduce a ...

Hey, I totally agree with US customary units being silly! I really wish my 3rd grade teacher was right, that the US was going to convert to the metric system (when Jimmy Carter was President).

Ah, luckily the 'freedom fries' era has ended, and it was thankfully short. BTUs however are used a lot.
Hopefully a potential potentiometer fixes the problem. If not, consider taking a peek at the speaker cone to see if it is intact.

Re: Unicomp Mini M / New Model M Tenkeyless
I have three Model M keyboards from Unicomp; an 'old' classic 101 (2010, which I am using now) and two 'old' ultra classic 104-key (2015 & 2016). I like them, a lot. I'm considering buying a 122 key from them if my work on a IBM-made 122 key Model M doesn't work out.

Interesting! I wonder what kind of switches my 1980's era Brother electric typewriter had in them (lost the typewriter in a divorce so can't check).

Thanks! I'm hoping I will like it enough to use it in the office once commuting resumes, and it will be a bit quieter than the Unicomp Model M I have been using (as part of being a good neighbor in cube-farm-land). Anything will be better than the dreadful stock Dell keyboards my employer gives us.

German isn't my first language, but it is my distant second, and I like the chance to shake off some of my rust in using it.
Here's my translation of some bits of it. Corrections from native speakers very welcome!

Re: Keycap bleed through?
Upon further inspection, there are some other differences between the bled-through keycaps and normal ones on this 1988 Model M.
Normal keycaps have, on the inside, a raised lettering (HI2 and J6 for two examples); the bled-through keycaps don't have that lettering inside. Also, on the front of ...

Yes, I am building the converter into a project box (not sure which yet, but likely some large metal electrical boxes I have hanging around).

There are more keycaps like that on this machine. Until now, I had only experience cleaning Unicomp Model M keycaps that I was certain of the provenance of (I am the original owner of the keyboards purchased directly from Unicomp). And none of the three Unicomp boards I own have anything like that ...

All very cool, thanks!
Perhaps someday my projects will go beyond being a cap and shell washer.
And like me, another fountain pen fan? Looks like a white Lamy on the keyboard.

Worst Keyboard?
Just found a photo of this on eBay.
This was the first computer I actually owned. I liked many aspects of it, but the keyboard was awful.

Oops, I'm a newbie here and missed the spoiler button. :+)

Based on almost nothing, I think so. Pretty sure Amphenol makes a connector that will mate with that plug, and also the IC pictured is similar to one of the IC's on the Model M I am working on.
Thanks!!

Very cool keyboard; would it be possible to show the connector type for it? Might help in figuring out if it is convertible to PS/2 or USB.

Keycap bleed through?
As I am cleaning these Model M keycaps, I noticed this odd detail as they were drying. Looks like the marking actually went all the way through the keycap? Is this common?

My first experience working with computers was in 1979 or 1980, typing on the keyboard of a paper teletype-style terminal attached to a mainframe via 300 baud acoustically coupled modem.
