I tried cleaning my F AT with isopropyl and my heart sunk when I saw I was removing paint.

I managed to sorta smooth it and hide what I had done by doing a 50/50 99% iso / water mix and a sponge.

So yeah, the paint is at least soluble in isopropyl alcohol

All this talk about buckling springs and smaller form factors is making my mouth water for BS 40s.

There’s a Buckling Spring QAZ project that’s trudging along slowly, but what I’d be really interested in is a minivan-sized (12.75x4u) keyboard that uses buckling springs.

Please don’t tell me you’re actually comparing something that was like 250$ when it was released (700$-ish now) to something like a 40$ keyboard in 2023.

IMO this counts more than a Unicomp one does. This was manufactured for IBM and is the same form-factor as an SSK more or less.

My 40%-using brain also loves that split bottom row (even if I primarily use big bar on my 40% keyboards).

As the title says, looking to buy an ISO AEKII backspace because it is 1.75u. Or the entire keyboard if you’d rather that, assuming it’s broken and I’m not taking the backspace off of an otherwise functional keyboard.

There’s an eBay seller who has got some pretty good repro badges made for a variety of IBM keyboards. I wish he’d get some of the blue on grey made for both regular M and SSK. Maybe I should bug him about that…

Not entirely sure if there’s a functional difference (I’d have to play around with some of my keyboards) but what color of plastic stabilizer is in the barrel? There are black and white ones. White ones for horizontal and black for vertical.

I’d try a black one if you can fish one out from another ...

A bolt/screw mod is just driving a screw into a circular bit of plastic, thats it. You have to try very hard to botch a mod like that.

Are we talking only Cherry-brand switches? Or Cherry style switches as well? The only Cherry brand switch I’ve tried that I’ve liked are vintage blacks and to an extent modern blacks. There are some decent cherry style switches tho

A (much) simpler way to measure the force of the key presses, is to put they keyboard *on* a good kitchen scale and measure the weight difference when you press the key. IMHO I think it is pretty accurate method.
