Woohoo! I ordered the beige base, Colemak & Co., Lost + Found, and Unicorn Barf. My CTRL High Profile is going to be complete with R5 goodness come October or thereabouts. Now, to order another or not to order? I'll sleep on it.

unfortunately red-on-teal doesn't work, so I'll probably have to revert to 1-bit colors.
Does red on beige work? Or maybe you have to do the legend printing the same for both colors of modifier?
of course there's a special /dev/tty2 key :D

I'm late to this one as usual, but I wanted to say thanks, Matt3o, for running /dev/tty with R5 again. I got triumph mods last time. I've been using them daily at work every day since, and wanted another set with beige for home. I have been resisting the urge to get the stripped down reruns of it ...

To recap:

3. An original flipper will NOT work in a new barrel.

Upside with everything we are talking about, we could take a legacy barrel/flipper and machine them down to try it.

For those without cases, maybe the Model MF curved assembly could be mounted to a metal "frame" and left exposed? It would look pretty badass as a naked keyboard.

Re: wcass' Compact SSK: a review, reverse engineer, teardown, geek-out.
I'd be fine with clamping a flat PCB between F-122 plates and heating it with a hot air gun or hair dryer until it takes on the curve. IIRC, that's what I$ did for the original FSSK.
The problem with strips are the interconnects between them. Lots of potential points of failure there.

Re: wcass' Compact SSK: a review, reverse engineer, teardown, geek-out.
Flippers in a regular model F are bouncing off the PCB and underside of the barrel, so I don't think there's any difference here. If anything the sound should be louder and crisper without foam surrounding the barrels and deadening the sound.

This is a truly wonderful project. I was fortunate to take a look at and tear down his earlier (non-functional) prototype, and this final product is truly light years beyond that one. I'm so impressed by all the little touches, like the countersunk barrels.
Great job, wcass!

Crazy that everything was just abandoned like that. Computer equipment in those days was incredibly expensive. Why didn't they sell it? Makes me think the building owner just locked the company out and it got stuck in some kind of stalemate.

Almost always, the two tone F keys like these means it a PC model. F keys on the terminal models are all gray.
However, zooming in I can see that the markings on the keys are for terminal use, so you'd most likely need a Soarer's converter to use them with a PC.
