Why not just revert the keyboard design? It isn't like the key feel was good in the first place due to the short travel. Adding the contamination shield will shorten the travel distance even more.

Mouse navigation via an FN layer like on the Ducky Mini would be good. If it's implemented well (no idea if this is easy or not) it works really well and is more intuitive than a trackball or a trackpoint IMO.

I was just going to convert mine (which arrived yesterday) by removing the ribbon cable from the board and putting it to a teensy. The manual should have a matrix of the keyboard in it, so it shouldn't be hard at all.
