Do the LEDs switch back on if you unplug and replug the keyboard while the computer is running? If so, then the keyboard does not store the setting in non-volatile memory.)
Regardless of its LEDs state when the keyboard gets replugged the LEDs stay off.

[VA87MR] LEDs switch back on after resuming from suspend under Linux
Hi,
I'm a newbie and I'm using a VA87MR from Varmilo (USB/illuminated). I use it under Linux (Fedora 25) and I found it surprising that all the time I resume my computer (keyboard it's attached to a laptop) the LEDs come back on if they were set off before closing the computer lid.
