I created the DESKTHORITY channel on Telegram before someone blocks the name :)

Anyone is invited!!

https://telegram.me/deskthority

I will pass on administration if the club elects a channel admin, I will give admin rights to any CLUB MEMBER who asks for it and promises to act responsible ;)

Okay I setup a CHANNEL instead of a Group ... Channel is one-way communication only.

The link has been moved to point to the GROUP now. Everyone is welcome!!!

Oh no, one more app to add haha... how about using Slack just like Ctrl Alt?

I don't like the way slack is going, got the impression they will start reducing free features of their software and add more and more pro-layers like evernote did ...

I also found the invitation process for slack channels pretty cumbersome and restrictive

The idea of a group chat/channel is that anyone can just pop in and say "Hi" and not spend an hour finding the form to the RIGHT "GH" slack channel and then signup with their email waiting for approval ... took me like three days to get in.

Nice, I had Telegram before, now I didn't have it anymore, because I got Threema for private and secure chats, Whatsapp for all other chats because everyone uses it, then installed Signal because it's encrypted like Threema but free and open, so three messengers on my phone. So there was no need for Telegram, now I installed it again just for you guys <3

It's no need to go mobile with Telegram ;)

The desktop & web apps are pretty neat ...

But one of the advantages, as you said, is having the chat on the web & on the go. So I installed it on my phone as well. Wouldn't hurt having some keyboard-related chat and pictures with me when traveling :)

If anyone enjoys web apps, I use a small program called Rambox which is essentially a wrapper for all kind of web apps, with system-wide notifications and support for a ton of services.
That way, I have Steam Chat, Twitter, Whatsapp, Facebook Messages and now, Telegram, all in a tabbed interface on my work machine.

@shreebles thanks for the tip. I remember the good old days when I had Miranda connected to everything, and then all the proprietary mobile messengers started creeping up.

BTW, don't forget that telegram has a CLI client as well. It's the best messenger I currently have. Until my mother joins it :)

If people want a change, I feel that we should have a real discussion and vote before doing something rather than just throwing ideas at the wall to see what sticks. Have you considered that under-utilization of the IRC channel might just be because many people feel that the forum is enough, and don't need or even want chat at all?

A change? This isn't a change. It's an addition, if anything.

Why do we need to have a long-winded discussion about such minor things? Why does it matter if people chat on Telegram, or IRC, or paper cups with string?

I think it's pretty clearly not the case that people don't want to chat -- I chat very often with Wodan and others (and have with others in the past too) on IRC, Telegram, and so on.

In principle, it doesn't matter how people chat. But if there's supposed to be a site-wide chat service, splitting that by creating a second one could reduce the value of both. If there are 20 people on one chat network, there's effectively a total of 190 connections between users. If half of those go to another network, then it's only 90 overall, making chat as a whole less than half as useful. And if some people try to stay on both, there's just more for them to keep track of. Because splitting the network in this way reduces the value of the network, in the long run, people will probably either end up all moving to the new service or all staying on the old one.

While it looks like an addition, making a new chat system for the group has ramifications that could make Deskthority chat as a whole even less used in the short term. In the long term, it's more likely that it will either be a change or not be used. I just think it would be nice to discuss the advantages/disadvantages of the change beforehand to reduce that possible short term headache.

Fellow club member uncletobai has some experience programming Telegram bots and will take on the task of posting all new forum messages from the spy.php into the Telegram chat!

You can click on group member count, and then select a contact from there and edit it. But, I don't know who is who, other than people that already are there with their DT username (or a variant of it).

While I tried to get into the IRC once and failed miserably (sheer and utter incompetence on my side), I've now successfully joined the telegram group.

The links work for me :(
Try installing Telegram and try the links again :)

The links work for me, but I can't get it to open neither the dtspy channel nor the dt group chat. The "get telegram" buttons work however.

nevermind: I haven't installed the app, only using telegram in my browser and for whatever reason the links provided don't give the option of opening either channel or chat in the browser.

These do, however:
Chat: https://telegram.me/deskthority
Spy: https://telegram.me/dtspy

The usernames are unique for all Telegram users. But the username is just used to pass on to people to find you. You can still freely choose your first and last name, they will be your display name during chat. My first/last name is Wodan and my username must be woutan because someone else took wodan.
