Good news!
I recently discovered that Deskthority was sold to Brown Brothers Media, a Singapore-based media network specializing in AI content creation, digital media, and strategic investment.

You can find their website here: https://brownbrothers.io

The eagle-eyed among you may have spotted that on October 14th, Deskthority.net's hosting moved from Hetzner in Germany to bigscoots in Florida. The mailing address of the registrant is in now in Singapore. The previous owner, OneCommerce, was based in the UK.

Hey OneCommerce: we are NEVER getting back together. Like, EVER.

October 14th was also the last day a member joined. Since then, it has been impossible for a new account to be created. (Presumably this was not an oversight by the new owners, and instead was a drastic but effective measure to reduce the spam that has been plaguing deskthority for years).

Coincidentally, this was around the time that the wiki became inaccessible to logged in users and thus stopped accepting any new information. (You can view the number of wiki edits displayed on the homepage over time). I'm confident it is undergoing maintenance as a part of Brown Brothers Media's commitment to "relentless scaling" and "audience engagement."

The "keyboardjoy" account, which owns the Deskthority forum, was last active on October 23rd, 7 days after the acquisition took place.

Anyway, just two and a half months after taking ownership of the site, Brown Brothers Media has already started making progress on https://deskthority.net/blog. Archive Link.

Viewing the Affiliate Disclosure page confirms that Deskthority is now owned by Brown Brothers Media.

The latest article appears verbatim on several other blogs, including "Get English Editing", owned by Brown Brothers Media:

Using the search function to look for a common search term produces some amusing results:

Anyway, I'll let you guys explore the Deskthority Blog and the Brown Brothers Media website for yourselves. Here are some links to their other websites, so you can get a taste of what they have in store for us:

Mosquito Fleet: "Revolutionizing Content Creation with Artificial Intelligence"
Hack Spirit: "your go-to source for transformative insights on self-improvement, mindfulness, and Eastern Philosophy"
Tippa Fleet: "Revolutionizing Content Creation with Artificial Intelligence"
Bible Scripture: "Ask Jesus: your personal guide to biblical wisdom"
Stoic Mindset: "a space where ancient wisdom meets contemporary life"

I hope you guys find this news as exciting as I do.

May I be the first to say congratulations webwit for refusing community offers and selling to a couple of bitcoin kids which has led to this outcome! This is the literal hell scenario everyone was worried about and it came to pass.

Worth mentioning that this now makes the site completely outside of any GDPR-aligned jurisdiction and your data is no longer safe, and your posts are likely now even moreso being fed into AI to train it.

e: in all likelihood GDPR was breached like fuck during the sale of the website and data was transferred with no regard to it, and the site is small enough that no information commissioner offices are going to care enough to wade in

Wow I love space invaders. If a person loves space invaders do stop ingesting data and please email onecommerce. Thanks.

@webwit It seems like this was a great plan from the beginning... No wonder you got kicked from GH.

By the way, you should check out 8 things a manipulator will do when you call them out on their behavior. It's a great article!

Great analysis, congratulation!

I would like to add just one detail:
October 14th was also the last day a member joined. Since then, it has been impossible for a new account to be created. (Presumably this was not an oversight by the new owners, and instead was a drastic but effective measure to reduce the spam that has been plaguing deskthority for years).
I had been daily banning new spam accounts by the dozens in the weeks before registering suddenly became impossible because of a Captcha issue which presumably is not intentional but results from the site migration (which I was not aware of). Lacking the skills to do it, I chose to not interfere with the technical administration of the site and try to fix the issue myself, but instead mailed all mods and admins for help, with no reaction except from one fellow mod.

Well, I fear now it doesn't matter anymore - sigh…

So we are moving from lazy british rich kids who are useless to some AI company which will be bankrupt in max. 2 years... See you when it happens again

Welcome to the DT series finale. It's going to suck.

Thanks, webwit, for selling us out so we could end up in this situation. I hope the money was worth losing everyone's respect. Special shout out to Pablo for being so forthright about this sale, which apparently happened months ago; I can't tell if conveniently failing to mention that the site was sold or who it was sold to is more or less of a gaslight than when Oliver pretended to be an independent keyboard enthusiast rather than an employee of a digital asset acquisition company.

Hi,

I propose that instead of crying we spin-off ...
It would mean that we will need to set a legal framework.
I propose that the main purpose should be to share information ... ;)

What do you think ?

Spinning off already kind of happened. The DT discord defederated from the site after OneCommerce lost interest in even doing basic maintenance (by which I mean when the site was down for extended periods of time multiple times in a row), becoming the Keyboard Institute (KBI): https://discord.gg/Yu6qQ4Ryh8
Note that this is not a new discord that was started in protest, but literally the original DT discord with the same administration, only under a new name.

In response to the wiki also becoming increasingly derelict (and due to the unclean nature of wiki's content and licensing), a related alternative wiki was also started. A switch database was also added later.

The only reason I only say "kind of" is because there isn't presently a forum alternative associated. At the time, it seemed like most people that stuck around the forum and not the discord were also the sort of people that would probably not want to move over to another forum instead of Deskthority. An associated forum being created is up to the maintainer of https://keyboard.institute/ (soyuz above), should she change her mind in light of this news.

I am a strong opponent to neural-network - based "AI".

With all the kindest intentions, I will have to inform you (whoever you are, reading this) that all my contributions in text and image to Deskthority's forum and wiki are for living beings only.
If you would feed any of that material to any neural network for "AI" "Content creation", then I will make sure that you yourself will stop being part of that group.
I think that would be very unnecessary, so let us just avoid that end, and instead continue to enjoy keyboard technology together.

There have already been a few spin-offs:

General Vintage Keyboards:
https://wiki.keyboard.institute/doku.php?id=start

Cherry Keyboards and Old Custom Keyboards:
https://kbdarchive.org/

NMB Keyboards:
https://wiki.vintkeys.ca/NMB

IBM Keyboards:
https://sharktastica.co.uk/contributing

Each of these people can help submit information that is currently missing and rebuild / better the vintage keyboard hobby outside of Deskthority.

Former active member Daniel Beardsmore has also compiled a bunch on his website.

On Reddit, I sometimes participate in /r/mechanicalkeyboards, /r/ergomechkeyboards and /r/Vintagekeyboards.

The software that the Deskthority Wiki is using (MediaWIki) is made for free sharing of information. All articles have therefore been available for download as XML source through the page "Special:AllPages".
Unfortunately, all scripts on the Wiki were disabled when it moved hosting, so it does not work now. However, some members have used it to take backups of the wiki (with or without editing history) several times during the last year before that happened.
Downloading images has always required crawling, and is a bit complex because of the WIki's directory structure. It would be best to extract the URLs from the XML file, to use only those.

Hello,

I was not thinking on the wiki.
My proposal was to self-host the forum.
The wiki should come later

Cheers

Nah, they haven't been disabled, which implies some technical knowledge and giving a shit by the new owners.

It's most likely a PHP misconfiguration on the new server (version mismatch, missing an extension, something like that), explaining the many error 500 thrown by the Special: pages, the inability to access the wiki when logged in, and also the errors on the forum. My bet would be on the PHP session management functionnalities in particular.

AFAIK, Brown Brothers haven't spoken officially yet, so until they say anything, you can assume that the dt forum & wiki are dying in front of our eyes.

There's what I assume is a complete dump of the wiki on archive.org, looks like it was done by the volunteer group known as wikiteam so it should be a good one, albeit a year old.

Have fun downloading and preserving it offline just in case.
