Finding a use for the light in a mouse

Does anyone know if it's possible to access the lighting functionality in a Logitech mouse, other than using the Logitech mouse software? As far as I can see, that software only allows very crude customization. What I'd like it to make the mouse light up, e.g., when I receive an e-mail or something like that. Is it possible? I'm using MacOS, but I'd be interested in hearing options for any OS.

Seems like a cool idea, and with rgb you could even do what phones do and have different colours for different applications.
No idea how to set that up tho.

I guess I will put it on my list of hobby projects to look into after I hand in my thesis.
