I would like to rename the category "Rubber domes" to "Rubber dome switches", but it does not seem possible to rename categories. It seems that I would have to create a new one and re-categorize every member, then unregister the old category.
How about subcategory "Integrated rubber dome switches". Or what should it be called?
It would refer to switches that are discrete component modules for mounting on a circuit board, with a rubber dome as part of the mechanism.
How about dividing "Membrane switches" into "Conductive membrane switches" and "Touching membrane switches" as subcategories?
Or should switches with conductive membranes and switches with conductive PCB's not be put into one category?
What is "spring-over-membrane switches" supposed to mean?
There are switches where a return spring physically touches a membrane sandwich ("touching membrane switches"), but it is not readily visible by inspecting that category that that is exactly what it means.
But if it does, should not a lot of switches be moved into it?

This is a subject that confuses me as well. I have sorted literally thousands of keyboards, and there are the following, that I can think of off the top of my head:
A keycap that presses on a rubber piece that in turn presses on a membrane
A keycap that presses on a rubber piece that in turn presses on a piece of metal that briefly touches to a pcb
A switch that presses on a rubber piece that in turn presses on a membrane
A switch that presses on a rubber piece that in turn presses on a piece of metal that briefly touches to a pcb
Rubberized keyboards that have no metal, such as the kind you can roll up
The ones where the keycap presses, if you remove the keycap, all you are staring at is a piece of rubber
The ones where the switch presses, if you remove the keycap, you see a switch, and under that is the rubber

The last two are generally called "rubber dome" and "dome with slider", respectively. Dome with slider keyboards come in all kinds of types, some of them fairly bizarre xD .

Good point Findecanor. I'm pretty sure only "wiki admins" can rename categories. Ask matt3o. Also this will involve a lot of renaming and moving stuff!

There is no category rename in mediawiki, but there is a ReplaceText page for wiki admin.
So step 1 is you create "Category:Rubber dome switches"
Step 2 is to make a redirect from "Category:Robber domes" to "Category:Robber dome switches". Don't delete the old category, people might have it in bookmarks, and search engines need to pick up the redirect.
Step 3 is to ask a wiki admin to replace "Category:Robber domes" and "Category:Robber_domes" to "Category:Robber dome switches" in all pages. The replace tool first will show all matching pages, so the admin can check if text will still flow and such after replacement.

There is no category rename "feature" as such, but they can be renamed just like you rename any other page. You need an account with the right privilege to be able to do it of course.webwit wrote: ↑There is no category rename in mediawiki, but there is a ReplaceText page for wiki admin.
