I never got to the bottom of this and would like to know also (in the end I decided to invest in switches for the ergo-clear mod instead)! I've heard some people claim that they are simply lubed blues, some claim that the sliders are made of a different plastic and that makes them different from lubed blues. I don't know if anyone has a source for a definitive test..there may be some Ripster thread on the net somewhere..sure I've read one these past few months. If it is just inconsistency in the lubing then perhaps order a few spares (a few more than you need for your KB build) so you can swap out the outliers?jefferai wrote:Can anyone give some advice on Whites? I have heard that they are quite inconsistent in terms of feel, likely because they are inconsistently lubed. Has anyone found this to be the case?

I'm in exactly that boat...deciding between ergoclears and whites. How are the ergoclears?fart_toast wrote:I never got to the bottom of this and would like to know also (in the end I decided to invest in switches for the ergo-clear mod instead)! Black slider is probably made from different plastic. Shape of slider should be the same and they should be lubed.
Couple of mine do feel almost exactly like greens (not blues fart_toast whites should have same spring as greens) and other do feel different and are very very silent. Those are probably lubed correctly.

Apologies YOTS, ofcourse I meant Greens Jefferai, I have only just got my order through (see a few posts above). However, this order is mainl7 90+ clears a few whites, a few greens, a few reds. So, I can have a play around with them and compare white, clear, blue, green blah blah blah. I can do this at the weekend and get back to you. PM me if you have specific questions and I can try and be as helpful as I can...though obviously the best way to tell is to try for yourself :/.
What it came down to for me when deciding between whites or clears to experiment with was the fact that I currently own 2 keyboards: one brown switch and one blue switch. I love the browns, blues i'm not AS keen with but I would go as far to say that I dislike them. I got thinking that my next build will my my main keyboard, seeing as I like browns more out of the two AND the fact that browns are quieter...I went for clears. This means that my main KB will be more versatile in that I would be able to take it to work and not drive everyone crazy and it'd have the switch type closest to that which I prefer.
Now, if I were to be fussy, i'd say I find brown springs that bit too weak...hence clears sound great. Also, they apparently have a longer tactile bump (playing with them last night, unmounted, that does seem to be the case), I like the idea of this. So more bump and stronger than my current favourite switch sounds like a winner! Now to make it sound even more of a perfect switch choice, I can choose to have some customs 62g or 65g korean springs which will be heavier than the brown switches but not as strong as the stock clears or greens etc....I don't know if clears are too strong for me...I have yet to find out. Basically, the option is there with springs so i'll be able to work it out whatever I discover.
TLDR - Clears offer me a lot of possibilities and ergo-clears sound like my perfect switch.

Wow -- thanks for the detailed info!fart_toast wrote: TLDR - Clears offer me a lot of possibilities and ergo-clears sound like my perfect switch.
This is my first mech keyboard and it's an ErgoDox (so I'm buying a bunch of keycaps from Round 5 for the ErgoDox and hoping I don't end up hating the ED and regret not buying a full TKL or ISO set for some other keyboard...but my carpal tunnel acts up too quickly on a regular keyboard. )
I had a few options in the ED group buy at Massdrop -- didn't know about this buy (or Deskthority, or GeekHack) at the time. I've played around on older IBM keyboards before and I like a click, but the blue is too loud for the workplace and the reds sounded way too weak so I went with clears and bought some 62g springs and thick lube off of Originative, with the idea of doing ergoclears. Whites sound, from my reading around, like a stiffer blue with a softer click -- but it also sounds like that softer click may just be from lubrication, and like the lubrication isn't consistent either.
So maybe I'm better off just doing my original ergoclear idea and seeing how I like it. I guess by the time I'm done with building the ErgoDox, I'll be experienced enough that switching out all switches won't be the hardest thing in the world, if I hate them.

@Jefferai , there is actually a heated debate still going on over in "workshop" concerning whites.. take a look if you haven't already. http://deskthority.net/workshop-f7/ergo ... t5152.html.
I'd personally go with the ergo-clear for the ergo-dox and see how you like it seeing as you have bought all the kit for it already! I did actually forget that I had ordered some whites amongst my big clears order so i'll go hunting for them tonight and get back with some results at the weekend.

I'm not a fan of whites. But I aslo don't like blues. The best clicky Cherry switches are MXGREEN, except they are too heavy.
The best Cherry switch (except for MXLOCK) is MXRED with vintage black stem.

Let me know if you want the NW-s and I send you some money to send the others back.

7bit, you're making me choose between being cheap and being impatient?! You just can't do that!
