Good question. The TKL kit + space bar is a good guide. Make sure that new ones match some position in that.

Further to Muirium's answers:

Pick up a couple of spacebars, as ABS will develop a bit of a shine eventually. It's nice to have spares/different colours etc.

You can use the diagram below for checking the sizes of keys on an ANSI layout board. It's useful for planning where you're going to put keys from kits like HONEY/FUNCTION/RED etc. Ignore the row numbers on the diagram below as they don't apply to these keycaps, it's just the widths that are the same. As Muirium said, use the image for HONEY/TKL from the wiki to give you an idea of what rows you'll have on the board. All of the other kits/keys you look at should have the row numbers on them too.
