A mash up of two of my favorite boards. The QAZ and the IBM 5251 Beamspring.
Designed in fusion 360. Printed on an Ender 3 Pro.
Started with a good picture of the side and extruded the profile from that. Tinkered with some plate generators to get the fit right.
Because Beamspring switches are:
1) impossible to get
2) capacative, meaning if have to design a PCB
I went with the next best thing (to me), Kalih Navies.
The board also boasts a solenoid to give it that authentic sound as you clatter and click.
The keycaps are from a Teletype Dataspeed 40. I am rehabbing one and acquired a second in the process so I had some spare caps. I had to print little adapters for them on a Anycubic Resin Printer to get them to work properly.
It prints in one solid piece, and on the bottom I put a clear piece of acrylic.
For Rev 2 I plan on making a seat for the solenoid, as right now it's kinda just rigged in there. Adding a piezo buzzer when it xomes in the mail later this week. Giving keys .1mm of space to the left and right if the board as it is a hair tight, though useable.
Almost forgot. I put the controller plug on the wrong side so I had to make a make shift hole in the back that is hideous, will also be fixed.

That is so cute it hurts
Interesting you think Kalih Navies are the next best thing. I’ve not had much experience with cherry switches so I might have to give them a try.

So I go for tactile loud switches. With the solenoid on you can barely hear then. Might be a way to get the auditory click I want while experimenting with linear switches. Navies are the clickiest switch out there so that's what I went with/had aroundthefarside wrote: 26 Mar 2022, 14:51 That is so cute it hurts![]()
