Ovioulsy anything before the advent of home / personal computers in mass production I'd say.
The history of the personal computer as a mass-market consumer electronic device began with the microcomputer revolution of the 1980s.

What do you define as the pre-beige era?
The beige era was the point at which the IBM PC clones flooded the market, causing basically every computer maker (non PC compatibles too) to switch to the beige colour scheme (and cylindrical keycaps) - around 1984/85 - the pre-beige era then being pre-1984. (though there is some overlap 1983-1985)

I remember when the beige era came in - and I hated it. I liked the earlier days of dark double-shot spherical keycaps, lots of black/silver/brown/blue colour schemes.

Nah, I never managed to get a wood grain computer (such a shame).

...of course Apple was beige long before 1984. They were beige from the beginning - even before IBM went beige. HP was beige in the early 70's (and Woz worked at HP before starting Apple). The "king of beige" was probably Univac. They were beige in the 60's.

I feel the same as you, man. I hate how the Model F/M utterly ruined keyboard aesthetics for generations to come.

With regard to terminology, I dislike how the drab dual-gray look of the Model F/M became known as "beige". The Apple II, III, Lisa, and Macintosh were more beige than the IBM PC, yet somehow the IBM products--which leeched all color from their product aesthetics--get called beige (instead of gray, or warm gray).

I used to hate IBM for that, but then I realized it was the clone makers that fucked everything up. So now I just hate Compaq. ;)

Edit: ...and the Germans... you got to hate Germans. Damn European keyboard standards!
"Just kidding." [he said while nervously looking side to side to see if any Germans were coming to kill him]

At this point (Hasu's alternative controller, TMK firmware, MX-compatible stems etc.), this keyboard is a proper cyborg :P

Nice keycaps, I also got my VIMcaps some time ago, I think they go really nicely with that beige OG keycaps. I think if you join the coming Hadapter round and replace the arrow keycaps with some diamond ones, it will look even better.

Thanks - yes, the arrows are the only keys that don't show what they should (but that doesn't bother me); frankly I'm not a big fan of the diamond logo ... any other "proper" logo would be nicer I think.

Ran out of daylight to take some keyboard pics but captured the vintage Cherry key caps. I love these types of key caps.

Those are terrific, snuci! They are what I call the real "OG Cherry" keycaps.

Nope, bought them from Karandach here on DT - I understand they are from a BS typewriter :)

Today I made a acrylic backplate for my custom plate that I got at Berlin Meetup as gift, I think it turned out really nice.

I wonder how he presses Hyper-Super-Ctrl-Alt-Del-<Up Arrow> or something :D But with the evil-mode Vim emulation package, Emacs can really be used with the HHKB :)

There was only HJKL in green or all the alphas were green?

All alphas - it's not quite a full set (i.e. the "]" "[" keys are missing, and maybe some more), probably all the alpha keys on that (unknown for me) typewriter.
