Improving my Acer 6312 with matias switches - is it possible?

imbattable

Hi fellas,

I bought an acer 6312 real cheap and really like the look and feel of the case and keycaps (that metal sandwich plate is a thing of beauty). The switches themselves on the other hand are pretty bad, most of all they are very loud. I gave the board to my girlfriend and she complains about the noise :)

So now I was wondering if it is possible to change the acer switches for matias switches (most probably quiet tactile). Has anybody ever done that before?

Hi,

I'm no expert but I believe the 6312 uses acer hybrid switches witch is hammer over membrane so no pcb. If that is the case matias will not work unfortunately, even though the tops of the switches look the same. If you pop a keycap you can see if a switch has an acer branding on it.

Edit, wiki for reference

A direct switch swap is most likely out of the question.
Perhaps the slider and tactile/click leaf could be swapped over, but the only way to know is try it.

I would lean towards no on the leaf swap, to be honest. An Acer 6012 is probably a better bet, it uses discrete Alps switches. (And, apparently some in the family were made with SKCM blues, which would be worthy on their own merits.)
