You need them for your Bluetooth Model M controllers, I'm guessing?
We were talking about Hasu's HHKB controllers, and the same applies here. The bluetooth chips themselves are full blown microprocessors with enough GPIO to drive a keyboard matrix alone. I like the nice!nano concept since it cuts out the 32u4 middleman and runs everything straight off an nRF52840.
