I updated the original post.

it's not easy to translate mostly because it just sounds silly, maybe the translation I proposed is the best option.

Here's the context, I'll use "Alles" unless you correct me.

Yes, I figured. "Alles" is better than "Alle Themen" in this context, sorry for even mentioning the latter.

Nononononono. Just call it "Mechanical Keyboard Club".

Yeah, it does sound shockingly square. That's its provocative charm, too.

I have no problem with "mechanical keyboard club" though.

If you post a topic in Marketplace, the categories are Member to member, Group buys, etc., and subcategories are (for Member to member) For sale, wanted, etc.

I'll have a demo up soon. The exact (sub)categories which will be used in the end have yet to be defined.

PS: Will the official German translator make up his mind about mechanical keyboard club - translate or keep it in English?
PPS: Club de claviers mécaniques sounds good to me. That's like club de fromage.

How about "Tastatur-Enthusiasten Verein" for the German translation? In general I'd like to call it more a keyboard enthusiast club than a mechanical keyboard club. Even our club master doesn't use mechanical keyboards at most times!

But I'd also be fine with just keeping it in English instead of translating it to German...

That's a good point. Although most of us enjoy mechanical keyboards, it could be argued that really the club consists of people who are enthusiastic about keyboards in general. Some of us even care so much as to document stuff like this.

7bit: You like "Kategorie" better than "Rubrik" in this context? :o

"Mechaniktastaturenverein". :D

I retract "Verein der Freunde mechanischer Tastaturen" for that.

But it's both a kind of humor that newcomers to the site might misunderstand. Maybe the plain simple translation

"Club für mechanische Tastaturen"

would be the best at this point, and we can spare the discussion of more semantic changes to that description for another time?

It is correctly translated, while yours is just wrong!

Also, you change from Rubrik (Rubric) to Gruppe (Group), another wrong translation.

"Verein der Freunde mechanischer Tastaturen" is wrong, because there are no Friends in "mechanical keyboard club"
:-)

Rubrik is the word that is used in this context in classified ads, that's why I used it. "Kategorie" (in contrast to category) is a totally generic term, more abstract, on a higher language level that its English counterpart, that only a software developer or someone translating from English would use for something like this in German IMO.

Your approach to translation is a bit mechanical ... ;)

Fine with me either way, it was just my suggestion for this.

Corrections have to be made to the French translation already proposed.
  • First of all, apparently "All" will appear twice, once in the upper tabs row as including "Members to members", "Group buys", "External" etc., and once in the lower tabs row as including "For sale", "Wanted", "Trade" etc. Right?
In that case the translation in the upper row would have to be "tous les…" or "toutes les…" and then the word used to define "Members to members" etc.. (I suppose that is what is meant by "subcategory", so that would be "Toutes les sous-catégories"),
and in the lower row again "tous les…" or "toutes les…", this time with the word used to define "For sale", "Wanted" etc. (if that is what is meant by "category" like it is until now, so that would be "Toutes les catégories")
That makes it long and complicated, so I would suggest just putting "Tout" for both.
It is short, it is easy to grasp, and it will always fit
  • If "Select a category" is "Choisir une catégorie" and "You must select a category" is "Vous devez choisir une catégorie", then "Select a subcategory" should be "Choisir une sous-catégorie" and "You must select a subcategory" should be "Vous devez choisir une sous-catégorie".
While both words are a correct translation, there is no reason to use "choisir" in one case and "sélectionner" in the other, and there is definitely no reason to use the infinitive in one case and the imperative in the other.
  • As for "mechanical keyboard club", I agree with kzhk that "club de claviers mécaniques" is "too literal, a bit weird in french". In French, after "club de" you would expect to have either people ("club de cyclistes") or an activity ("club de cyclisme"), but not a thing.
I would propose a trade-off just putting the keyboards in the singular (with an appropriate change of the preposition), which would exclude the (strange but straitghtforward) idea the club is composed of keyboards, so "Club du clavier mécanique".
    Frenchies, any other/better ideas?
And webwit, please make sure either no or all items end with a full stop ;)
Spoiler:
I love writing long posts

I do agree.
"Mechaniktastaturenverein" would mean that "Mechaniktastaturen" (which semantically would evoke "keyboards used for mechanical devices") are the members of the club. Good joke, I would say, but not what should appear on the website header.

I find "Club für mechanische Tastaturen" OK. Perhaps it sounds quite "spießig",
but still less than "Verein der Freunde mechanischer Tastaturen"

Isn't "Club für mechanische Tastaturen" the translation of "Club du clavier mécanique"?

No. That would be "Club der mechanischen Tastatur", which in German sounds rather silly.
As would "Club pour les claviers mécaniques" in French
