I've been auctioning for a very long time, this is a clear case of the seller (or friends/trolls) inflating the price. Usually people aren't foolish enough to fall for it, especially seasoned KB buyers.

I'm glad I just have a singular focus on Alps (it's a defense mechanism, trust me), because otherwise I'd go apeshit over being unable to acquire rare boards like the Symbolics and such.

The best way to find boards is offline.

Oh, Alps is the only switch I really care about, but the space cadet has so much history behind it that I'd love one. I've heard the switches are great too.

Geek cred, it is infamous in the hacker community. It also was born in the MIT AI lab with people like Tom Knight and Richard Stallman. It also heavily inspired the development of Emacs.

Plus it is ultra rare, and has pretty amazing keycaps plus excellent Honeywell switches.

But I also think it is nostalgia, all the students that "grew up" at MIT have excellent memories of the CADR and other Lisp Machines, all using the legendary keyboards- making them yearn to relive some of that magic.

And then you have people like Webwit.

Funnily enough, I was just at Stanford last week and got a couple pictures of the SAIL keyboard on display in the computer science department.

Though it was through glass.

If you look at the keyboard the layout is very interesting with the enter and backspace positions swapped.

Haha, at my school, we have the venerable IBM PCjr on display.

(But we also have I think an Apple II and a portable TRS-80, and who knows what else)

that HP one I had to use a lot and I found it REALLY crappy to type on.. no clue how HP managed to create a rubber dome that feels like rusty when you type on it.. should be pretty difficult to realize such a crap imho..

the PCjr layout I really love.. never tried it out but I hear it could have similar "rusty"/"crappy" typing feeling as well..I think sooner or later I'd try to get one to try to refurbish the caps in order to use them on cherry mx stems somehow and handwire the matrix to some teensy in the insides.. anyone?

and that microscope? oh man! any closeup of his unisys keyb?

There are all kinds of interesting sellers on eBay. I just encountered one who packs up the item before even listing. Listing says "Feel free to contact with any questions." I asked a specific question about the item itself. He replied: "Sorry, item is already packed up."

Smart cookie right there. What a great selling practice, make the item inaccessible so you can't answer any questions.
