Unacceptable lies perpetrated by --Rootwyrm--

In any case, how many items did Berserkfan sell? Managing a big sale isn't difficult -- it's just time consuming to set up a proper inventory system. The multiple selling, even if it was unintentional, was terrible. The shipping was in a shambles. The follow up communications were nothing short of standoffish or nonexistent.

None of those characteristics inspire buyer confidence, so ass covering and intense distrust were a reasonable reaction (if not an ideal one). Saying that Rootwyrm is solely responsible for the defamation of Berserkfan is silly. The seller excavated himself a nice, deep grave. Even if he was helped into it, he's liable for digging it.

I'm willing to entertain the fact that Berserkfan is a decent guy who is simply inept or incapable of handling large sales (perhaps due to his "situation"), but what it means is functionally the same for users. Most will look at it like a scam or a broken contract.

Nor, I should add, is it the responsibility of buyers to organize and re-ship items to their proper owners. Could they do sor as a community service? Yes. Are they obligated to? No. A buyer should only be held responsible for returns. In this case, returns were only somewhat viable (partially due to the fact that Berserkfan's shipping/inventory system was deeply flawed, thus he had no real 1:1 record of what went to whom).

If you can't sell right or handle contingencies, do not sell things.

No dispute as to the Berserkfan's negligence during the initial phase of this sale.. And while I am unsure of his full capabilities, I recall he is in the technical field by occuption, so most likely since this happened during a large move as part of a moving sale, the coordination was not of his finest..

We also agree on the fact that Berserkfan is not the most adept negotiator or publics relations official.

However, Berserkfan is upstanding, and he stood by and attempted behind the scenes organization, up until actions were made impossible by the Lies and Lynchmobbing perpetrated by user --Rootwyrm--..

Even if we accept that --Rootwyrm-- and skysphoric / chuckdee has done the ONE right thing to organize a tabulation of shipments after the fact..

Right after the initial shipment error, there was no need to defame Berserkfan. file disputes which locked the paypal account functions, and the fact remains --Rootwyrm-- etc are simply WRONG..

This was not a scam... a poorly handled moving sale, fine, but NOT a scam...

The lynch mob, as you so aptly put it, could have been defused with a few rational and detailed posts from Berserkfan, imo.

"I would like to take full responsibility for this. I had my wife do the packing while she was upset with me -- likely because of a few poor decisions I've made. Because of that, she threw random things in various packages. I'll do my best to coordinate inter-customer shipping, but some items will be unrecoverable due to the greed of individuals. I'll fully refund shipping for those who received the wrong items, pay for shipping to their proper owners, and refund anyone whose items have been stolen. I trust that you will not take advantage of my generosity."

I wasn't quibbling over whether it was a scam or not. I'm saying that it is functionally the same for the buyer at this point. The only real differences are seller profit and seller intent, neither of which affect the end user.

You've been yammering about defamation for quite some time. Scamming is one thing -- that's intentional and requires a basic level of intelligence and malice. Let's assume, then, that he isn't a scammer.

Would it be alright if we call him a blathering incompetent whose personal misfortune is only overshadowed by his poor communication skills?

Being "upstanding" doesn't protect one from being berated as an idiot.

Again.. Berserkfan's negligence on shipping is to be berated.. and His public relations strategy, also poor..

Those two issues are not in dispute..

I've completely stuck to the fact that the mistake were made, but not intentionally, and that if you are to judge his character, he DID stay by to fix things until it was made impossible by --Rootwyrm--.

And -Rootwyrm's- CONTINUED defamation remains a problem as they are untrue.. --Rootwyrm-- also denies responsibility for the lies and for making the situation as badly handled as it became...

That's because geekhack gets hacked every week and people need somewhere to vent...so they come to Deskthority.

I've been a member of both sites for years and I've been lurking geekhack for even longer, but I find Deskthority the more sophisticated version of Geekhack.

As for your thread...honestly, I don't care. I think most people don't either. It's all just internet drama.

1+ to this.

Appreciate that someone finally has some good words for DT after several generic "DT disses" that I got worked up about yesterday. ;)

Overall I am thankful to Deskthority, its existence thwarts the tyranny of the keyboard overlords at geekhack.

As for which site is more sophisticated.. hrrrmm...

I think the code / platform for deskthority is indeed superior to geekhack..

The bandwidth must be higher too or maybe just less users, because the site responds much faster between page loads.

If you're talking about the people..

Haha.. Geekhack has equivalent personalities as seebart and cookie. rowdy guys who roll for attention, go into threads to say unrelated things.. look at me, look at me, then they post a picture of something and run outside again. /shrug K...

As for --Who cares-- about my thread.. it's made to the benefit of those who do care.. that's all it is.. preserving the truthful description of the proper order of events related to the Shipping debacle..

Take a deep breath. It's the internet. It doesn't matter. It literally does not matter.

I would never have the heart to scam somebody, some people do. It's drama, but all will be forgotten soon. Nobody will say "oh my god, I remember what tp4 said all those years ago ... on the internet, of all places!".

As for people, I know of noone on Deskthority that hits the rock bottom quite like geekhack. There's some really dodgy people on GH, people I would never want to hang out with. I'm not saying all GHers are like that - quite the opposite, GH has some wonderful people. But it has some rotten apples. I wouldn't say I jig with everyone on DT, but that's fine, just a difference in opinion mostly.

It probably has something to do with community size as well (DT is no doubt smaller than GH).

yea.. all of those things you say are true.. but the Berserkfan shipping debacle 2016 is an On Going event.. and there are malicious people over at Geekhack currently wrongfully slandering Berserkfan..

This information is for Berserkfan, and also the people possibly affected by the shipping problem to keep the proper facts within their awareness..

--Rootwyrm, skysphoric, chuckdee-- I don't believe deep down they're bad people, exactly, but they're certainly no champions.

These guys, especially --Rootwyrm-- did the most damage to the situation and made it much more difficult than it would have been..

Well, ok so here I'm getting into theory, which is apart from the FACTS in the OP

I am inclined to believe that this whole thing happened the way it did, because at some point, --Rootwyrm-- truly believed that Berserkfan was a scammer. and eventually --Rootwyrm-- HAD to keep saying that, otherwise he has to redact his entire argument against Berserkfan..

Essentially, there was No-Ladder for --Rootwyrm-- to come down on..

He made a huge mistake to chastise and thwart a Good Person (Berserkfan), and to remain unimpeach-ed, --Rootwyrm-- keeps his story straight.. Regardless of any evidence to the contrary, OF WHICH there are many, As Tp4 has outlined in the OP.. :|

I can say I feel badly for both of them.. Of course --Rootwyrm-- is still completely in the wrong here.. But this is what happens when you play politics, you make mistakes, and you have to keep your story straight..

Anyone tried Royal Chivas? Hunter S. Thompson was mad for it, but I can't say I concur with him on that. Perhaps it was his Kentucky heritage. I mean, there's some damn pricey "whiskeys" from those parts, but none of those quite do it for me either. Fine and all that they stay in business—their bourbon barrels are the key ingredient for so much of Scottish whisky aging—but sometimes you've got to wonder where someone's coming from in the first place. That such a personal thing as taste can still be so geographically defined really says a lot about nurture over nature, to me.

Unless it's literally in the water down there…
