Hash tag support

Hash tags are a great way to link information across topics and sub-forums and group content/information independent of the thread it is posted in. Is there a way to add some kind of "hash tag" functionality to this forum software? Basically turn every hash tag on a clickable link that will list all posts containing the identical hash tag?

Apart from the popular kids usage of hash tags, there's a real value behind using them to tag important posts and make them more visible.

Yeah that's what I found as well. Not a phpBB expert so I'm relying on your judgement regarding the fesability.

The usefulness depends very much on how it works.

On one forum I frequent, hashtags are almost never used. People don't remember to add them to their topics.
On the very public forum slashdot (where everyone can be a moderator), hashtags can be added by everyone, so they are.
On yet another, hashtags are used more like a subforum/categorization mechanism, and we already have those so a feature that works that way would not be very useful.

What I am growing to like about hashtags is the "unrestricted" use of them. You can personally use them to keep posts of interest together or you can define some "common" hashtags that people of a particular interest group use to keep their project work together across several threads. Just consider the ModelMF project, so many other topics that played a role in that project. Would be pretty awesome to bring that all together using #modelmf as a tag.

You start a topic/project and define 2-3 hashtags to let users collect useful information all over DT. Next month you see something amazing for DTA 2017 that you probably have long forgotten by the time nominations are up ... tag it with #dta2017candidate or #dta2017bestphoto

Cool idea -- I wasn't really buying it but you sold me with your last example. Trying to think back to cool pictures or projects throughout the year is tough, and a lot of nominations and winners tend to be those toward the end of the year while it's fresh in everyone's mind. This is absolutely not to say that they are undeserved, just that we could potentially be missing people who also equally deserve a nomination but were unlucky enough to do their good deed early in the year. Even if we just had it as a 'tag' or 'labels' feature that is not exposed to everyone and can be searched for later.

On an unrelated note: I think it was a great idea to get reddit and GH more involved this year; especially in categories where DT traditionally is passive or has little interest (e.g. artisans, and to a lesser degree, keycaps).

OK interesting about the HASH TAG SUPPORT, BUT we don't need to "make DT great again" , it's been great all along (and I don't like that phrase that the trumpet people got here):

No implementation is needed. Just tag the posts you want, and whenever you need to find all posts with a certain tag do an advanced search with the tag as the term.
Sure it's one step more than clicking the hashtag, but it requires no implementation.

True, I can just use hashtags for myself and create my own little searches for them. Or maybe even do some client side jquery or scripting to link them to searches. It wouldn't be a hell of a deal to add this functionality server side though - if I understand the link above correctly - and would greatly promote the usage of hash tags

Octothorpes in front of words are an eyesore. I'm strongly against spreading them beyond the garbage "social media" sites where they originated. We have a search feature after all, and it works pretty well.

The idea behind hash tag or generally tagging content is actually scientific and was just made popular on Twitter and other casual sites. This doesn't mean that they can be used for something useful ...

We have a very adult audience here, I have great confidence we will not see many posts overflowing with hash tags like a picture of a vegan meal posted on facebook ...

actually doing your own tagging system and use the search-function for it isn't that easy in phpbb, because search replaces any non-alphanum with spaces (i.e. word seperator).

If this wasn't the case it would be easy (I guess) to do an autocorrection for anything starting e.g. with # with a link to searchresults for that tag.

I'm afraid that isn't as simple to integrate to phpBB and offers less freedom when using tags. Especially the project threads here sometimes get very long and lots of amazing information gets lost in an epic post on page 7 of 19 ... even if you remember the thread you will be scrolling through pages of the thread to dig it out again. Finding it would be much easier if it was well tagged or someone replied with helpful tags to mark it.

Yes, well tagged and structured data is nice to navigate, but I'm imagining #dickbutt, #yolo and hashtag abuse all over DT.

I think we may be pooh-poohing a potentially useful tool simply because it has been used in poor ways elsewhere.

We aren't Twitter. I despise hashtags in their social media context, but at the same time... Finding similar posts on DT through hashtags and whatnot could be quite useful. It could also be much faster than traditional searches.

I need to think more about this initiative and whether I support it.

Are you referring to the fact that the hashtag p13329580 at the end of the url you posted was turned into a search when clicking on that part of the link?

Oh and the hashtag is not included in the actual search behind the link
