Can you imagine how tiring this is for us, Europeans? DT is mostly EU forum and #1 thread is some autistic retard going on and on about what his idiotic circle jerk is telling him about his president.chuckdee wrote: ↑One thread 'clutters' the spy and makes the forum look bad? There's more than a bit of hyperbole in that statement, I think. More likely, it annoys you seeing it in the spy. There are 25 threads in the spy, and one thread that you can just pass over isn't 'cluttering' the spy. To be clear, I'm not defending jacobus and the thread at all.Ratfink wrote: ↑It makes the forum as a whole look bad. It clutters the spy. It's helping the clickbait sites he links to get higher in search results. It's essentially spam. At least the thread became fun, and unrelated to the original topic.
It's the reactions of the other forum members that really cause me to engage on the subject. I'm totally burnt out of the subject (really bad, when we're only 3 months into it), and yeah, seeing all of this stuff is like a wreck in slow motion. I don't want to click on it, and sometimes don't. It's annoying when it appears. The tone of the thread is annoying.
But I'd hope that we can just choose to ignore it, for however long it takes. You talk about making the forum look bad, I think that the responses to him make the forum look bad, personally.
Imagine having a thread with relentless spam of half assed articles on Slovenian politics then. Who gives a shit.

Don't look at it, maybe? Just scan past it. If we had a thread with a relentless spam of half assed articles on Slovenian politics, I'd scan past it. I do that with several threads.
The spy is the first tab under the deskthority banner. It collects the most active topics using some algorithm.Mr.Nobody wrote: ↑This thread is okay as long as it's in off-topic subforum IMHO,BTW, what the word "spy" refers to?

I just had a look at jacobolus’ profile:
and then had a look at his posts.
His latest 30 posts were all in this thread, the oldest of the 30 being dated "28 Feb 2017, 01:32".
That's 30 posts in one month.
And this corresponds quite exactly to his average post count since he registered in July 2013 (1.04 per day).
So I don't see how it can be called "spam".

It's not adapting, IMO. It's just common sense, and being an adult, as I posted earlier from matt3o. That post from him really made me look at what I was doing. tp4 was one guy in one thread, and I don't know him and what he thinks has no effect on the issue at hand. But I found myself arguing with him over and over. And it did nothing (for me, nor against him), and didn't reflect well on me either.adhoc wrote: ↑So it's better for the entire forum to adapt instead of one individual role playing his politics for teens blog? What kind of logic is that?
A further example: Mostrem os vossos teclados!
It's in a language that I don't know. I don't even know, nor can I understand, the substance of the thread. It's pointless to me, in all honesty. And it's in the spy. But, someone wants to post, and I guess there's some conversation going on (for all I know, it could be like this thread). But I'm not going to ask them to change, or it not to be in the spy. Instead, I look past it.
Respect others' freedom to do whatever they want, including be assholes, unless it is really detrimental to everyone else, for instance if he was posting political stuff in unrelated threads, or this thread wasn't in off topic. It seems stupid to me at this point, but I don't know if there are silent members that like to read his stuff. I suppose we could have a poll as to what to be done about this thread, but even that seems like a lot of effort over something stupid that doesn't make any difference.

There’s been more off-topic whining, lame insults, and looping meta-discussion in this thread than there has been content. There were points a while back where we were having some decent level of information sharing going on, until a few members dumped their steaming insult shitpile over the whole thing.
Several members appear to be disappointed that their Russian stooge and his sycophantic followers all might be going down. I can certainly understand that when they come to a keyboard forum they don’t want to be reminded of the unpopularity and moral bankruptcy of their political views, or the incompetence and crimes of their idols.
I don’t have enough time and effort to get deep into keyboards at the moment. Keyboard projects take hours of focused attention. I’m just here to blow off steam for a few minutes a day as I watch my country turn to shit.
Sorry for winding you up a bit, adhoc. It’s really hard not to make fun of someone who thinks that “autistic retard” is the world’s wittiest insult. It’s kind of nostalgic though. “Retard” was a favorite playground insult at elementary schools in Southern CA in the 1990s, alongside “faggot”. Really brings me back to memories of beating older kids at kickball.

I'm not trying to be witty, I'm trying to make you stop. Just fucking stop. We don't care about your politics. You understand that? We don't give a shit about your country. Go to reddit or geekhack or whatever, just stop spamming your hatred and vitriol all over here. This is the part you singularly fail to understand. When you're not getting the desired responses back, the topic has run its course and it's time to call it a day. It's quite evident that this isn't a topic that many people here are anxious to debate, which results in people watching you just talk to yourself in vain. At that point it gets tedious.jacobolus wrote: ↑There’s been more off-topic whining, lame insults, and looping meta-discussion in this thread than there has been content.
You really do come across to me like a spammer, and as little more than a bot. There really are spammers/bots that regurgitate bits of the topic as fresh sentences before posting spam links, and this is how you come across: ignoring everything anyone says simply because you're not even a real person, but just a persistent bot.

Daniel: I know you’re really grumpy about the typewriter thing, to the point that it apparently re-grumps you every time you see my name, but come on. I’ve made a small fraction of the posts in this thread, and a much smaller fraction of the content-free whining, name-calling, weird meta speculation, and other nonsense that made the thread toxic. You should stop clicking on this thread topic if you’re so anxious about it, and go back to taking pictures of spiders instead of worrying about whether I’m a bot.
Edit: PS the spider pictures are nice. Feel free to keep posting those.

OK no BOT could come up with the terminology "re-grump". The truth is that before we had some fun here the other day with spider pics and other stuff this thread was a three-man event for weeks and months. In between we had the webwit diss and some pre-re-insultee grumping but that's it. Three people rambling US politics for well over thirty pages.jacobolus wrote: ↑...to the point that it apparently re-grumps you every time you see my name...
Damn that trump-A-dump made you ReGrump! (check the rhyme... )
I still would not call any of this SPAM though just to be clear.

Going back approximately 100 hours to my post with the link to the "Fresh Air" interview, there have been approximately 96 posts, only 3 of which contained actual content related to the actual topic of this "Off-Topic" thread = the US Republican Party.
All the rest are insults, bickering, complaining, and requests that the thread be killed.
I am genuinely interested in valid thoughtful contributions from civilized adults, which is why I started the thread.

I didn't go to a Portuguese forum. I take it you didn't even read my post. How stupid is that.
I was going to try to give you a picture of the Spy as it seemed that you don't want to read, but it's already fallen off, so words will have to do. On the offhand that you were just replying reflexively and didn't want to read, please do so before responding. Or don't. I'm pretty much done.

Here’s one webwit should be concerned about: apparently 1000+ civilians killed in air strikes in Iraq and Syria this month alone. https://www.democracynow.org/2017/3/27/ ... ans_killed

Well I certainly didn't pick up on the spy being the main focus of your post, even though I did read it, simply because my main argument against jacobolus' blog on communism here isn't the spy. I don't use spy. I never have. So I certainly had no idea this was used as an argument against me. I still don't understand why it could be even.chuckdee wrote: ↑I was going to try to give you a picture of the Spy as it seemed that you don't want to read, but it's already fallen off, so words will have to do. I'm just sick of reading this liberal propaganda. Imagine having a thread where someone would be posting neonazi propaganda every day. Would you want to read that shit? This ultra left, ultra liberal propaganda bullshit is to me exactly the same as the ultra right, fascist neo nazi shit. You americans have it great, for you can look at socialism and communism with rose tinted glasses. Some of us had their entire family (except some women and children) killed simply for not conforming to communistic bullshit party just a few decades ago.
And Obama was the president who spent the most days in war during his presidency of any president in history of the US and amounted more debt than all 43 presidents in the history of the US combined. America killing people all around the world has NEVER been an issue for you, why did it become now? Because "your guy" isn't doing it? Fuck off you disgusting hypocrite. How dare you take victims as a platform for your simplistic worldview propaganda?! Besides, again a pointless post, I don't recall anyone here being enthusiastic about Trump. But you don't understand that anyway, because everything is black and white in your simplistic understanding of the world. Or blue and red, actually.jacobolus wrote: ↑Here’s one webwit should be concerned about: apparently 1000+ civilians killed in air strikes in Iraq and Syria this month alone. https://www.democracynow.org/2017/3/27/ ... ans_killed

Thanks for responding in that fashion. I was just going to be done, because in the end it doesn't matter. But I'll try to make this again.adhoc wrote: ↑Well I certainly didn't pick up on the spy being the main focus of your post, even though I did read it, simply because my main argument against jacobolus' blog on communism here isn't the spy. There are several threads that have nothing to do with me, but I see them. I use the unread view mostly. I read what I want to and click mark all read. A lot of people complain about it appearing in the Spy. I scan past stuff I'm not interested in. I'm not sure how you consume the forum. But it's your choice to look at the thread. You don't have to. The responses seem to be either (a) reflexive to seeing it appear, or (b) you choose to read it- maybe just out of curiosity.
He isn't going to stop. No one is going to close the thread. Just don't visit and ignore it. Let him do what he will, and scan over it rather than getting into an apoplexy over his actions. I just hate seeing how this thread has degenerated, and the arguments and name-calling, so I tried to give a different way, based on matt3o's words on the subject in general.
And with that, I'm done in this thread, and will follow my own advice. I don't think there's anything further to be said on that subject.

Complaining about threads that appear in the spy is silly. At least one third of everything in the spy does not interest me, then there are several threads that I know I don't want to open, that's what the spy is for! The only argument I've seen in this direction that made slight sense to me is people complaining about too few keyboards related threads in general. The only thing that turned me off about this thread is it being predominantly frequented by the same three users.

No, not you kbdfr. An offtopic + political thread like this really needs lots of posts by different users for it to be really good IMO, even if it's "only" limited to US politics.
On a political note the brexit situation is "interesting" in a negative sense (to me) and now the Scottish may get their second independence referendum. But don't worry I won't open a thread for this.
