The problem isn't that he said "Lexmark only made rubber dome". Instead, the issue is in the delivery. That exact sentence made it sound like "Some of the changes that Lexmark made, as compared to IBM, is that they used rubber domes". Now, obviously, that doesn't necessitate that they only made rubber dome M's, but it can be construed that way depending on how you hear it.

Please read the transcription again. And this time, take special note of the preceding phrase: "Lexmark continued to make these keyboards for IBM, but more cheaper [sic]. This Model M, from 1995, demonstrates some of the changes, …". It's pretty clear he's listing some of the changes in the keyboards LexMark made for IBM. The actual word "all" isn't necessary here, as the redaction makes evident that he's talking about the whole set of them.
The real problem, of course, is that whoever wrote the script really needs to get back to middle school and pay attention during class.

He singled out the Model M he actually had in front of him and stated the changes that were made in that specific keyboard. He never once claimed ALL lexmarks were the exact same.
Yes the script is the problem, he sounded like an idiot, especially when saying 'more cheaper' but he never actually claimed all of the lexmark models used domes.

Of course not — I reserve that kind of vitriol for people whom I actually dislike.
The problem is different — in my experience, whenever I have to discuss the "finer details" of improper redaction (either in Spanish or English... and I suspect in other languages as well), whenever someone has made an erroneous reading of a particular phrase, it takes quite some effort to have him "clear up" his mind and read it again without the previous impression tainting the new act. Anyway, let's agree to disagree and leave it at that.

You are still wrong, saying that the keyboards were changed to rubberdome does not mean that all keyboards were changed.

I'm not sure why this is such a polarizing issue, the video was ambiguous. The first time I watched the video I got the same impression. It's not hard to make that logical connection.

It really does not matter at all. What's annoying is this knee-jerk reaction to Linus, a media group that normally doesn't engage in tech that isn't current, where people will just seek out any flaw to point out. Just to declare it a bad video.Blaise170 wrote: ↑I'm not sure why this is such a polarizing issue, the video was ambiguous. The first time I watched the video I got the same impression. It feels like gatekeeping.

The video isn't good (IMHO), and that's not gatekeeping (IMHO). As I mentioned elsewhere, even selectively forgetting stuff like "more cheaper", the narrative is flawed (IMHO), the history section misses too much (IMHO), there are two major errors in the information that is given (one if you discount the RD debacle), and the stuff with the shirt at the end is mildly funny only once (IMHO). It could have been much better had some more care been taken (IMHO) and feels like a missed opportunity to me (IMHO).

IMHO if you don't like it, you should make your own video that meets all your reasonable requirements. I think a history lesson from users with the right knowledge will obviously be far better than having some YouTuber whip something together for ad money.

I don't necessarily think it's gatekeeping. He could have easily found more info on Model Ms with a quick google search, the information is easily accessible. It's also his job to make videos and given that he wanted a more serious tone with this video, he could have bothered to do a little bit more research. I still wouldn't say it's a bad video, just that there were some parts that could have been better and I personally would have gone more in depth.Craweth wrote: ↑It really does not matter at all. Yeah, the biggest mistake I made in my life was at Linus' age. Hey I lived it as well, maybe it's the fallacy of being an arrogant teenager and somehow thinking I knew how the world functions with all of it's devices, hence I had to let strangers know about this, so-called new 'truth' (almost religious-like).__red__ wrote: ↑ Yeah, the biggest mistake I made in my life was at Linus' age. The stupidity of innocence, thinking I knew something about anything. Only with time, do you actually know how the world functions in reality and you re-adjust your thinking, to decipher all the information (both fake and real) coming in on a daily basis.
The Model-M has lot's of free information about it's inception and it's production timeline, hence if you want to put your face in front of any camera, you better get those details correct. Otherwise your utterances will be there to haunt you, till the end of internet time.

I confess, I am so old that I was not only around at the introduction of the IBM PC 5150, I actually remember using one in the early 80ies.
I also have to admit, that I like Linus' Videos. Sure, most of them are "Gamer Things" and I have not much interest in those, but he also does some stuff I enjoy.
But keyboards ... keyboards are Thomas' thing and he is just great.

I now know what all the hubbub is about. I just got my first Model F in today and wow. I can see why some hold it in even higher regard then Beamspring or Blue Alps. Very refined.

Correct, the Model-F is in an area which both defies reality but also sets the highest benchmark's in Clicky Heaven.codemonkeymike wrote: ↑I now know what all the hubbub is about. Yes, they are indeed very satisfying if you love the REAL sound of inputting data onto any style of Computer.
The Beamspring will always be the "Jackhammer" of Keyboarding.

I have to agree with the general sentiments being expressed here. I feel like there is honestly a lack of appreciation for clicky switches in the world of modern keyboards. I'd have to wager that tactile and linear switches seem to be much more popular nowadays since perhaps up until very recently (with BOX Jade/Navy), there has been very little effort being made in developing and promoting modern clicky switches. I too have only joined the Model F club fairly recently, but I sincerely hope that a project like this will help put capacitive buckling springs in the hands of significantly more people

It's hard to like most clicky switches because they are just so bad. The shrill squeak of Cherry MX Blue for example is just awful.

Wouldn't class any Cherry made switch as "Clicky" they're not even in the same class of decency, as the current made Kailh BOX Switches.Blaise170 wrote: ↑It's hard to like most clicky switches because they are just so bad. The shrill squeak of Cherry MX Blue for example is just awful.
But do not even try to stomp on anything to do with Model-Ms and F's, let alone cast any disgusting condemnations upon our Beamspring keyboards.
We will never succumb to that level of atrocity, classing any Cherry Switch as 'Clicky' (fake news) .

Wow, lots of angry keyboard warriors (pun intended) here. Linus created a channel with 5M subscribers by understanding his audience, creating content that appeals more broadly than any one specific subculture while still giving enough depth to keep the electronics/hardware geek crowd entertained.
Is Linus more of a gamer gear guy than a hardcore keyboarding guy? OF COURSE HE BLOODY IS. Does he get 100% of his script perfect in every detail in every video? Of course not - nobody does, even people like XMIT, Beardsmore and Chyros once had a day when they learned a new thing.
If he's not your cup of tea, maybe it's not because he's doing anything wrong, maybe you just aren't his target audience. And maybe the reason why some of you are getting your panties in such a twist is that deep inside you believe you could do a lot better and that you are the one who deserves an audience. If so -- great, go make your own channel and show us all! Until then, try to troll less and be kind to people.
