IBM 5140 at a somewhat reasonable price and shipping cost (USA):

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Working-Vintag ... :rk:1:pf:0
Is that the model that has SKCM browns in it? If so someone scored a great deal, it sold at $175US! Well, that is if the switches are in good condition, but the whole unit looked pretty clean so I can't see any obvious reason they wouldn't be.

I saw that earlier. My hope is that they just have no idea wtf the item is and are too lazy to lookup what they go for, and so they just put a crazy ballpark number.

That, or maybe they had to promise someone who got tired of listening to it that they would "sell" it, its just going to take "a while".

They sold a raspberry pi for an extremely reasonable price, so they probably aren't just price gouging thinking they will actually get that much.

Yes, indeed. The IBM 5140 has SKCM brown Alps switches and lovely dye-sublimated PBT Alps-mount keycaps. I would have liked to have purchased this one, but I am way over my budget for the year already!

+$50 in shipping though. So $225 overall, which is probably about market value for SKCM browns ATM I would say.

To be fair, the 5140 is a monster of a keyboard so the $50 shipping is probable justified

Oh it definitely is! I feel like shipping cost is modeled by an exponential function rather than a linear one.

me: got 3 packages going to the UK!
PO guy: sounds good let's hear it
me: First one is 2lbs
PO guy: Righto, that'll be $28.23
me: Sounds right - next one is 3lbs 2oz
PO: guy: Okay, lookin' at $32 on the nose
me: Cool cool - last one is 5lbs 7oz
PO guy: Sure thing - that one is $135.68

Yep! (Of course, there's my idea of the budget for keyboard stuff and then there's my wife's notion of the same thing).

Of course, the IBM 5140 as sold here is a "luggable" computer. If you are only after the keyboard, some people can be convinced to disconnect the keyboard and sell it separately. The keyboard portion is very small and light. I got one this way for $50 shipped.

Yes, usually that should be avoided above all.

SHE must never find out the true cost of doing business, in the Keyboard World. ........World's will collide if she ever finds out  .

You may have hit the threshold for an international First Class package, which is greater than the 1lbs it is domestically, and there is a dramatic price jump after it.

Thanks for the reply, the caps from it do look lovely! I hear you about the budget, I managed to score a Videowriter last week & that definitely didn't fit in with my KB budget for this yr. Although it figures, I decide this is the year I'm gonna cut back on spending on this hobby (I really need to get to upgrading my PC!) & all of the sudden I'm finding all my Holy Grail boards/switches at reasonable prices LOL!

It looks like it is from around '99 when the first iMac had introduced the trend with translucent or transparent plastic.
It is also available in Mac versions: this on the wiki in the same type transparent plastic, and this one in opaque plastic, which I suspect is earlier.

Edit: Goddamnit... The quote-boxes in the new forum theme remind me of "Bondi Blue" iMac.

Filco can swim with the best of them, in any cesspit.

This was an attempted but very conservative copy of the early iMac phase when Jobsie took power of Apple, again. It was his so-called cleverness to introduce bright-Lolly coloured PC casings and ensemble, as the new horizon for Apple Corp.

Little did it mean for every other PC device manufacturer to follow suit. Sometimes what Apple 'fabricates', is best left alone or ignored.

Ah, the candy wrapper fantastic phase of early Jobs 2.0. Those were the days. It was the late 90s after all.

As the Velvet Underground put it:
candy screen wrappers of silkscreen fantastic
requiring memories, both lovely and guilt-free,
lurid and lovely with twiight of ages
All applies. Including the interpretation (via that link):
Could just be a choice of words that sounded nice together without regard for their meaning.
Jobs and Ive’s romance in a nutshell. As evidenced in their material designs as well.

Fortunately for copycats everywhere, they got their shit together once they rediscovered metal.
