The Pro Micro and Leonardo have almost the same electronics. A difficulty is that Arduino boards tend to have a different pin numbering, making iit more difficult to find out which actual ATmega32U4 pin is where.
I found this chart in the Wiki that brings them together. (AVR pins in yellow)
That leaves the bootloader. I know people have flashed the Leonardo with avrdude - and there should be forum posts about it out there to google for

the adafruit 32u4 breakout board is good if you need a lot of IO. some people flash leonardo bootloader with the breakout board but the original adafruit 32u4 breakout board bootloader is more logical,

The Leonardo worked perfectly as a converter following the guide. Pretty sad that the guide was deleted/taken down as Leonardo is widely available and pretty cheap to boot. Also there was zero soldering needed with some dupont cables, good for beginners and as a flexible converter platform.
