Can I remove the silencing rings from my HHKB Type-S?

Hi, I'm quite new to this forum, but I figured this might be a good place to ask.

I currently have an HHKB Pro 2 Type-S, but I've never tried out a non silenced version, how do the two compare? And most importantly, can I just remove the silencing rings on my current board and have the same experience as the normal version?

Was wondering because the silencing part doesn't really matter as much to me anymore ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and from the videos I've seen online the sound on the normal version sounds rather cool. I don't really know about the feel so I'd like to know more about that too, please let me know thx :)

The only obvious change is the sound to be completely honest with you. If i were to close my eyes and ears type on both, i wouldn’t be able to tell which was which. The silencing happens on the upstroke by cushioning the slider against the housing, so the downstroke key press feel really isn’t altered.

As for removing the rings, you can, and it will still work, but you shouldn’t. Type-S and silenced realforce sliders are made slightly longer than standard sliders to account for the thickness of the foam silencing rings. And on the flip side, it isn’t ideal to add silencing rings to standard sliders either as it’ll pre-compress the domes, some of the early silencing rings like hyperspheres did cause minimal damage to domes. Though these days you can find silencing rings that are much thinner, and won’t damage the domes at all!

If you want to try unsilenced topre, shop for an old pro 2, or realforce r1/r2. They can often be found very cheap.

Yeah I ended up just looking for a regular old pro 2, I found one on ebay which was at a decent price but the listing is a bit sketchy not gonna lie TvT. It has free retruns so I guess I could try a shot at it? I honestly don't know where else I'd look for one other than r/mechmarket and ebay... I'd so much love finding an older board compared to the one I have right now (2019)

Join the conical keyboards community on discord, I’ve bought and sold there a bunch of times in the past l, you’re more likely to get a good deal there.
