I concur, but I also put my money where my paranoia is and host my own email and Nextcloud on my own hardware in a data center. So, maybe I'm not wholly normal either. Don't get me ranting on GMail these days either!you are not crazy, it's the others who are

Wow, that's excellent to see!webwit wrote: ↑08 Nov 2019, 11:44Update, we now got aprox 1400 EUR, which together with existing funds is enough for almost 2 years of hosting and other costs.
One person donated 250 USD! Thanks! Here's an updated list of donations:

It's a mixed bag for sure, but for me the good outweighs the bad on Nextcloud. I've been running my instance since 2011 or 2012, started off with ownCloud and converted over when the fork happened. Helps that it's easy enough for my SO to use too.

Your not crazy, as soon as i can get a AMD GPU to beat my 1080ti i am switching too. Nvidia are a a PITA on linux with there crappy closed source driverlhutton wrote: ↑08 Nov 2019, 02:32Subscribed!
I don't post often but I like to see these old style web boards stay around. If there's any way I can help with the technical side of things let me know. I've been a Linux and BSD admin for well over a decade for a university and before that for their physics department. I'm also crazy enough to use a Linux desktop.
I dont need all the fancy pants stuff of nextcloud.
Syncthing does me just fine . https://syncthing.net/

don't be fooled by the linux shenanigans, I'm running on nvidia with no issues for years. If yours is a more ethical dilemma (being the code closed source) I can relate to that, but then you have your motherboard bios that is closed source and the CPU microcode, an possibly many binary blobs for wifi, 4g modems, etc etc... soooo it's not that we can actually live in a bubble (yeah there are microcode free experiments and freeboot and so on but still very limited in hardware compatibility and anyway very betaish)andrewjoy wrote: ↑11 Nov 2019, 10:37Your not crazy, as soon as i can get a AMD GPU to beat my 1080ti i am switching too. Its not just the drivers being closed , AMD has better support for vulcan , the drives are integrated into MESA so i dont have to screw around instilling them and you get updates and fixes more often.matt3o wrote: ↑11 Nov 2019, 10:47don't be fooled by the linux shenanigans, I'm running on nvidia with no issues for years. If your system is 80% software 10% drives and 10% microcode, 80% free software is better than none , and 90% is better than 80%. ( something that the FSF and GNU should learn)
I also want to support a company that actually embraces Linux and open source rather than one that gives 0 shits. Want to run your nvidia GTX/RTX GPU passed through to a VM ? Fuck off and buy a quadro you cheapskate ( yes i know there are ways around it).
On GPU and VMs ... man if the radeon 7 had supported SR-IOV i would have picked on up in a heartbeat !

that is true but performance is still very hit and miss. There has been some improvement lately and some benchmarks are actually looking nice, but in day-to-day usage UNFORTUNATELY nvidia is still better (not to mention cuda). Personally I've had more luck with intel GPU than AMD.

I just wanted to thank all who donated something to keep the shack going. It's actually reinvigorating to see that so many people are so invested in our little website.
Oh well then, we'll be on the scene for at least another 2 years

I've used Syncthing in the past but it lacks a lot of what normal/non technical people are expecting and TBH the other Dav features of Nextcloud are nice for sharing calendars and addresses. File syncing is probably the weakest feature of Nextcloud IMO. It used to work better before they migrated to their current agile development model. Now the files module seems to suffer due to the attention on the other new shiny. Move fast and break things indeed.andrewjoy wrote: ↑11 Nov 2019, 10:37
