A dead key is a key that does not produce a symbol on its own but acts as a modifier for the key press that follows.
They are often used for adding diacritic marks to letters. For instance, in German and Nordic layouts the letter 'ë' (the letter 'e' with an umlaut) can be produced by first pressing the dead key "^~ followed by e. To get the letter 'ê', you would press Shift + "^~, then e.
