Elecom rack and pinion is a provisional name for a form of low-profile switch. Elecom is only a suggested manufacturer, as the exact details are not known.
The mechanism is an alternative to the scissor switch for supporting keycaps over rubber domes. Each dome is surrounded by four long pinions, on one each side. Four perpendicular racks projecting down from the keycap engage with the pinions, which support the keycap.[1]
The pinions are lubricated, and one potential point of concern is the introduction of dust and detritus into the pinions.
