Mecha-membrane and mem-chanical are words used to describe keyboards with key switches that have one or a few characteristics in common with popular mechanical keyboards but which most rubber-dome keyboards lack.
The terms were invented for marketing, to ride on the popularity of mechanical keyboards in recent years. Many older rubber-dome keyboards could have the same properties but have never been marketed with any of these terms.
The "mecha"/"chanical" component in the word can refer to:
- That each dome has a slider that is not integrated into the keycap
- Rubber dome with built-in clicker (Razer Ornata)
- Spring-based mechanism over membrane switch (Cooler Master MS120). Also referred to as "Semi-mechanical" in the enthusiast community.
- Some loosely defined "mechanical feel"
