A modular keyboard is one where the keyboard areas are placed into separate physical modules. Such keyboards allow the owner to rearrange the keyboard or to select which areas are to be available.
Internal modules
The Datadesk Switchboard (AKA DSI Modular Pro) features internal modules. The alphanumeric cluster, navigation cluster and numeric keypad have one module each, while the function key row is fixed. The three modules can be rearranged to suit the owner's preference. The modules fit inside the frame of the keyboard and fit into a shared backplane; as such, the keyboard cannot be reduced in size by omitting any of the modules.
External modules
The DSI Modular Mac is the most notable externally modular keyboard. The product itself is slightly larger than a 75% keyboard, and has no numeric keypad. Additional modules can be attached to either side; a numeric keypad module is available. In the case of the Modular Mac, the modules appear to be secured using solely the friction fit of the USB connection between the keyboard and the module.
Such keyboards can be used in their original size, or extended in size with additional features as desired by the owner.
