The print screen key is designated various operating system–dependent tasks with a common goal of taking a copy of the contents of the screen. In MS-DOS, pressing the print screen key would literally print a copy of the screen to the printer, so long as the computer was in hardware text mode.

In Microsoft Windows, the print screen key normally copies part or all of the screen to the global clipboard. The Macintosh lacks such a key, but the various keyboard shortcuts used on the Mac will by default save the image to the desktop.
