A ribbon cable is a multi-way cable where all the conductors are arranged side-by-side in parallel, forming a flat "ribbon".

Laptop keyboards typically lack a keyboard controller, and a ribbon cable is used to connect the keyboard matrix to the controller chip on the laptop's motherboard. A thick bundle of cables would not fit in the laptop's keyboard well, nor would it be able to negotiate any tight turns, where a ribbon cable can be folded back on itself, or through 90 degrees.
