Unitek K-258: Same name, two keyboards
Unitek outsourced the production of K-258 to two Taiwanese OEMs resulting in two different keyboards with the same (model) name:
- NTC (Nan Tan Computer Co.) manufactured two versions of the K-258 (this keyboard version was also sold/known as NTC KB-6551 as imprinted on its board). The earlier version used a steel plate and Alps SKCM White switches, while a cheaper version was made with a plastic plate and Alps SKBM White switches.
- Dah Yang (Dah Yang Industry Co Ltd) also manufactured a Cherry MX Blue version of the K-258
Despite sharing the same compact footprint, the two versions use different layouts and have separate FCC IDs. Size-wise, both are approximately 394 x 165 mm / 15.5 x 6.5 inches. An NTC-like version re-appeared some years later as Unitech K258 ("K258 Rugged Keyboard") with the same layout but with PS/2 connector.[1]
