A wand is a pointing device in a three-dimensional space, but is often used also for gestural input. A quintessential wand is shaped like a stick, often with buttons and a joystick or d-pad, and is wireless. Some wands for entertainment purposes can be shaped more like real-world objects (such as weapons) resembling in-game counterparts.

In the 1990's they were confined to immersive virtual environments setups such as a CAVE, set up primarily at universities and large corporations. In the mid '00s, they started appearing for video game consoles: Examples include the Nintendo Wii Remote and the PlayStation Move. More types of wands have appeared after renewed interest in virtual environments in the 2010s.

A wand could be constructed as two or more position trackers (of some kind) in 3D space or as a position tracker for position and a gyro or accelerometer to find orientation.
