Re: The Great Keyboard Layout Comparison: 2021 edition.

Hi

I did actually consider that but figured someone would want the OTHER of whichever of these I picked:

The Great Keyboard Layout Comparison: 2021 edition.

Hi all

It's been a while since the the last time I did this exercise (2017) but I have done another comparison between the various keyboard layouts.

The results are up at https://www.keyboard-design.com/best-layouts.html

As part of the process, I also refreshed the Internet Letter Layout DB ...

Aha, so harder is not neccesarily better then, because i too am after that "warm and fuzzy" feeling.

Good old brass then, should be cheap, and easy to find in a suitable thickness. Glad you guys talked some sense into me.

FWIW, I'm also going to try brass.. have bought the plate. It will be for ...

XDA is Chinese clone of DSA. Slightly taller AFAIK.

If you ask these guys nicely, they may be able to make a plan for you.

Any of the analyzer tools can be feed with a keyboard layout directly from KLE?

Not that I know of ... the problem is that KLE allows "any" form factor, and the analyzers are pedantic about only dealing with known form factors.

I have some code that goes the other way (from KLA to KLE), but ...

Evaluating keyboard layouts with word-based metrics

hi All

Current methods for evaluating keyboard layouts are usually based on analyzing what the fingers do, using complex measurements to track distance, alternation, repeated use, etc.

When Maltron arrived, they used a different metric: how many words you could type on their home row, compared to ...

I've posted a curated list of the best keyboard layouts for comment/criticism/etc. Constructive criticism welcome.

hi all

I'm building a keyboard which will be machined out of a solid block of wood (not unlike keyboard.io model 1), except one piece not two.

Am a bit stumped as to what to use for feet.

Ideally I would like something stylish which is adjustable front and back, for positive and negative tilt to ...

The best way to trigger Caps Lock isn't with a dedicated key, but with a macro: press both Shift keys to toggle it on and off. This works wonders for me. I prefer a Control key left of A instead of a dangerous bugger like cAPS lOCK.

I recently became aware of the scroll lock use in Excel, but that seems to be only use case for it nowadays.

I think the 4-arrows and mouse have essentially replaced the need for nav on the numpad, except when you don't have a mouse or your arrow keys are broken, as pointed out.

Keyboard Layout Editor / Ian J Prest

Hi

Anyone know how to get hold of Ian Prest?

Myself and another are busy doing some updates to his code and want to know the legal situation...

He hasn't done anything on it for years, or replied to issues on GitHub. I did try Twitter, but there also his last activity was ages ago.

thanks, Ian

Pins are for breadboarding and custom PCBs. If you're thinking of anything else, go pinless.

What build guides have caught your eye? What are you planning, construction wise?

Woof.

2.0 hasn't enough pins for a slab of a keyboard like this. Must be 2++.

The slab borrows design ideas from MS Natural original and Maltron. Key area is less than 42 cm wide.

Last question: with or without pins?
