I know I said I finally got one of the rarest Cherry keyboards before when I first received the G80-3500, but I think this one might top it. I do not know whether the seller wishes to be revealed, but thank you very, very much for contacting me about this and helping me fill this impossible god-tier hole in my Cherry collection.
The pics below are just for preview, I'll take better ones at a later point and entirely take the thing apart.

I just could not think of a better place for a Cherry keyboard to retire

Thank you again! I opened the thing up today and found out that it can be very easily converted into the pseduo ISO-US layout (there already are solder spots for the bigger shift key). Now this is where my collectors-soul battles with my modding-soul... keep it in the original state or mod it!? Hmm!kbdfr wrote:sixty wrote:I know I said I finally got one of the rarest Cherry keyboards before when I first received the G80-3500, but I think this one might top it. PS: Do you have any idea how to program this one? I couldn't figure it out by randomly pushing buttons and it seems to work differently from the G80-2100. I guess I might give Cherry a call to see if they still have any type of documents otherwise.

Definitely keep in in the original state. If not, you will have terrible dreams of this respectable keyboard featuring pink keys backlighted greensixty wrote:I opened the thing up today and found out that it can be very easily converted into the pseduo ISO-US layout (there already are solder spots for the bigger shift key). No clue. I do not even remember when I bought it, and I surely did so assuming it was just programmable like a 80-2100.Do you have any idea how to program this one? I couldn't figure it out by randomly pushing buttons and it seems to work differently from the G80-2100.

Also, I noticed that the PCB is really really thick compared to the other Cherry PCBs. Combined with the three layers of isolation and the metal backplate there is virtually no flexing at all. I think this is the most stable PCB mounted board I have ever tried!

I really don't understand why later Cherry keyboards must have such a complicated click together system, instead of some simple screws.
Congratulation!

Rewire the keys of a G80-2100 instead and put in a calculator from a Gateway 2000, or something like that!
BTW: What does the †-key do?

I don't like the way the 2100 is being programmed. Also the keys for programming it are at the wrong places. Would be better to have them out of the way in the function-row panel.xbb wrote:I want one, or a 2100 is also fine!
2100 is a collectible item but not so useful as a 2550 which is the best keyboard I currently own (thanks to sixty!).
The main problem with the 2100 is that you can't type-in arbitrary key codes for the programmable keys but just codes which are already type-able with another key on the keyboard. It is possible to type whole sentences into the keyboard and program it to spit that out when pressing some of these function keys. But this is not useful when you want to remap a key in X11, because these keys are not distinguishable from the genuine keys you've used to program them.

Well, as I (shame on me) never had heard of X11 before, I am completely satisfied with my 2100 (and I use it on an everyday basis).7bit wrote:I don't like the way the 2100 is being programmed. About the place for the programming keys: there was an earlier version of the 2100 which had only the "cherry" key for programming, placed as key 24 on the second row of programmable keys - so there were only 23 keys left for programming. But of course you may be right, the programming keys are somewhat in the way when typing.
Well, either you're a touchtypist, so you don't mind because you don't hit them anyway, or you're not a touch typist, so you don't mind because you see them anyway

Let me guess: You use Windows!kbdfr wrote:Well, as I (shame on me) never had heard of X11 before, I am completely satisfied with my 2100 (and I use it on an everyday basis).

However, to place the programming keys "out of the way" is much better. It would be also great to be able to specify key-codes which should be sent when a key is hit. Key-sequences of already existing keys are not so useful.
I'm a non-touch-typist, so the more keys the better, especially at easy to reach places!
BTW: being not a touch-typist does not mean I've got to look at the keys all the time.

I'm not in computers at all, I just have to type all day long, and that's why I'm interested in keyboards

Basically you're right, of course.
But then, the 2100 allows me to use any combination of modifier keys + function key intuitively just with my left hand without having to look. I find this compensates for having a nice Cherry key (with a diode window) in the middle of my keyboard
