I could not recommend to do it by yourself. Much too strenuous overall.

If you would like to have 1 or 2, buy it from the professionals here.

How does this work? You buy some rope for climbing and fiddle the USB cable into it? Looking good though!

I also made some custom cables just recently, although with nylon robe from Bauhaus at the price of €2. I just pulled out the core from the robe and fiddled the USB cable inside. It was extremely time consuming and very hard on the fingers. the robe was 6mm in size and I believe the USB cable about 4 or 5mm, so I think the robe should have a larger dimension in order to easier fit the cable, as it is now a very tight fit.

I've also been there, sleeving is long and painful
and in the end I couldn't solder the connectors properly so I gave up!
do you have a technique to keep the connector and cable stable while soldering?

you could use a chunk of wood and hammer nails in it to hold either.
or yoga style:
hold the cable with feet, solder iron in right hand, usb-thingy in left hand, soldering lint in mouth and DON'T MOVE!

Well spotted, breathing in that position is not recommended

I would proudly brag about my yoga soldering abilities but I'm afraid I am not flexible enough!

I use a Helping Hand. It's pretty useful for a lot of different soldering jobs. costs next to nothing too.

a "helping hand" is required for soldering this kind of stuff. But it is still no fun soldering mini and micro USB connectors. I have to use the glasses from my wife, because my old eyes could not sharp this small things anymore.
Time to get my own glasses...
