The race is now on for an authentic picture of a squirrel typing, or at least sitting, on a keyboard. We will still judge the picture by the keyboard, of course.

It is not from me, it is just a sample how the ball should be placed so I can see it. In the original it is always placed outside my browser window ...Muirium wrote:Nice Selectric, 7bit. But we really want more balls.

Oh you want more balls, do you?Muirium wrote:But we really want more balls.
(I bet you were worried I'd post my other balls. Though they'd look good as a header, they're not really an input device.)
This isn't a serious submission though because I agree with Halvar that this is output, not input.

70mm on your cropped 7D which is about 112mm on full format.
But nice pics, if I find the mood and time, I'll have to take some photos as well

PLEASE PUT IT MORE TO THE LEFT AND RE-SHOOT IT!

The focal length of a 70mm lens on a sub-DX camera is 70mm. Because the sensor is 1.6^2=2.56 times smaller, a 70mm lens only sees as much as a 112mm lens would see on 35mm Film.Acanthophis wrote:Isn't it the other way round?jesterjunk wrote:Focal Length: 70mm ( equivalent to 112mm on ×1.6 crap sensor body )
70mm on your crapped 7D which is about 112mm on full format.

I've got enough space, but prefer to have my monitor less wide than my keyboard for reasons of aesthetics!
Also, I find it ridiculous that you suggest I should buy a larger monitor just because a Canon-amateur is not able to place a spring properly!

How much do you know about image composition? Because you simply don't put important objects in the middle of a picture. It's something beginners do all the time and it looks weird.
I also wonder how you even browse DT (be it with header images or without) if your browser is narrower than 765px - that's where the spring ends in the green picture.
EDIT: I agree with webwit. Humans can't multitask so a fullscreen browser is the way to go.

I'd say you can definitely put an important object in the center of a picture and still take a great photo - my belief is it's important to acknowledge there's definitely no set rules for photography. Although there are guidelines, it's important not to mistake them for rules. However, in most cases, these guidelines work the best, so I'd like to rephrase your statement a bit: You simply don't put important objects in the middle of a picture unless you know what you're doing.
7bit: buy a monitor that's 2 times as wide as your keyboard and everything will look just fine and proportional again!

You're starting to remind me of that Microsoft Windows freak on geekhack. I mean... fucking upgrade. This is coming from somebody who used 696x482 on Amiga 500 up to 2008, for fuck's sake. This is now 2013.7bit wrote:THE SPRING IS TOO FAR OFF MY BROWSER WINDOW!!!!!!!!

OK, that was a bit harsh . But from what I see, jesterjunk's photos are nicely set up for people who don't still use resolutions from 1998.

Yeah right! Don't feed the trolls or I call the Demongolator!
Here is one of the best header images ever: It is perfect because the main subject is between the DESKTHORITY-text and the links on top-right.
The browsersize is no matter of 1024 vs. 4096 screens, but a matter of how close you are to the monitor and how large your font is. Sure, on a larger monitor, make the font larger, sit farer away and the header-image fits perfect (or is too short )
Ever wondered why in newspapers there are several columns? Why books have only around 66 letters per line?
Long talk short: Forcing a fixed browser width is bad idea which makes DT look like a "best viewed on 2048x4096-screens with Internet Exploder '95"-site!

Like a book and a newspaper column, the DT web site does have a fixed width, which makes your whole point moot. Header images can use the whole width, because the site, texts, inline pictures, menus, icons, everything else uses the whole width, too.

It is not the fixed with, it is the number of characters. Fewer character on a line make it easier to read.
The first line of your post is 118 character wide (96 without spaces). That is ~1.5 times as much as in a novel book!
Now, who is the troll?

Don't be so complicated then. Just write yourself a small userscript that changes the layout and scales the header image accordingly. It isn't that hard and we wouldn't have to argue7bit wrote:It is not the fixed with, it is the number of characters. Fewer character on a line make it easier to read.
